Mayweather-Marquez failed to sell out

Pac made $1million fighting Morales THREE times and Bob Arum was extremely proud of it.

 

dont be silly now. Come onstop this. Mayweather could only be in a 1mil fight AFTER he had to face hatton and de la hoya. What was he doing before?

same with many. hes fought those two guys and his stock has risen. Regardless the guy isnt even american! like mayweather is

 

Mayweather-Marquez Hits 1 Million Pay-Per-View Buys

NEW YORK -- HBO Sports reported today that one million pay-per-view buys were generated from last Saturday’s welterweight fight between Floyd Mayweather and Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The fight was promoted by Mayweather Promotions and Golden Boy Promotions.

The one million buy total represents the highest performing boxing pay-per-view event in 2009 and generated $52 million in pay-per-view revenue. The million buys include 525,000 from cable homes and 475,000 from satellite homes. It is only the fifth time in boxing pay-per-view history that a non-heavyweight event has attained the one million buy mark. Mayweather, a bona fide superstar, returned to the ring after a 21-month absence and showed no signs of rust in scoring a dominating victory. He has now participated in two events that have reached the one million buy mark.

“Sept. 19 was an event that connected with sports fans across the country,” said Mark Taffet of HBO Pay-Per-View. “Floyd Mayweather has clearly reinforced his standing as a top attraction and fans are excited about his return to the sport.”

Mayweather vs. Marquez will be replayed this Saturday, Sept. 26 at 10:00 p.m. ET/ 7:00 p.m. PT on HBO. The 12-round unanimous decision triumph by Mayweather will be paired with the live heavyweight title fight featuring Vitali Klitschko and Cristobal Arreola from Los Angeles.

 

1 million is good, don't get me wrong.

But Hatton did 2 million homes in UK alone against PBF.
Wladimir brought 11 million viewers against Chagaev and packed a football arena.

Floyd is a draw, but he's nowhere close to filling a football arena, or drawing 11 million homes even on free HBO.

 

:good IT's about PPVs! Live gate is great but it comes down to home many fights are bought at home.

 

I wonder why a fight can do really well at PPV but not on livegate? What sort of fans buy ppv but not attend events?

 

Perhaps, but that is precisely because of the PPV's that the sport lost much of it's following.

The PPV's are killing boxing plain and simple. Ironically the 1 mil PPV buys for PBF-Marquez is judged by many to be a sign that the sport is healthy.

It's healthier in Germany on free TV, that's for sure. And I'm no fan of the German events or their referees.

 

Why travel, pays hundreds of dollars on tickets, hotel, gas. When you can stay at home and spend 50-60$ on a PPV or go to a theater.

 

When boxing first came to TV in the 50's , there was a considerable drop in live gates. So much so, that over the next decade almost all of the smaller boxing venues, like Sunnyside Gardens in Queens for example , became obsolete and eventually shut down. PPV , Cable and premium cable apparently hurt live attendance as well.
But to hear Wlad had 11 million hits AND filled a soccer stadium is pretty impressive.
Kind of makes last weekends bore fest 1 million hits and unfilled arena look pretty anemic.

 

Right...that doesn't explain why a fight can draw 200k ppv but fill a 20k seater...yet a fight that can draw 1mil cant fill a 15k seater?

Perhaps it requires to be a "fan" of a fighter to travel for them...ie Hatton has many fans that want to see him, yet PPV buyers are casual and mainstream fans that cant be arsed to travel and pay for neither fighter, but want to see the fight anyways.

I would go to the fights if I could but the money to go is too much for me right now.

Although I plan to start going to more local ones with San Rafeal possibly.

I actually gotta check to see if there are any upcoming.

 

You guys are lucky you actually get big fights over there. Only opportunities we have for big fights here are Khan & Hatton! And I suppose Haye.

 

Yea but Im in Cali. I have the staples center somewhat close but Vegas too far.

 

Plus the drive over from LA to Vegas is long, hot, and dangerous. Personally though I prefer non-major events. I went to the Olympic Auditorium and paid $5 dollars once and I was able to meet Johnie Tapia, Chuck Bodak, and Hector Lopez. The tickets were $5 because they could not get people into the arena.

 

I told you before Scar stop putting $ in front of those PPV numbers, its very deceptive.

Pac/EM had a total of 1million PPVs for their trilogy which is impressive for guys at their weights.
