PPv numbers is definetely the deciding factor, but bringing a title belt is far from being "****" especially when bringing it against another belt. Apart from team pac agreeing to a 50/50 split maybe they felt that perhaps Floyd is a tad bigger cash cow than Pac but bringing a title to the table evens it out for 50/50. While banking on just PPV's for mosely/mayweather anything between 800,000 - 1.2 million will just cause another stalemate and leave us back where we were in January.
He'd still have the leverage either way........"I beat the WBA champ and spat at the belt!" In Mayweather's case there are two reasons to not want that WBA belt......The sanctioning fees he would have to pay for owning it........and the other is that he would'nt have to worry about the WBA telling him who he has to fight. Good move in this case by Mayweather because he has nothing to gain by owning that belt........having it lessens his purse for this fight and future fights. When you're the best, and most people know it, you dont need a belt.
Believe me when I tell you that belt means nothing in terms of a Mayweather/Pacquiao fight. If the belt was so important, Floyd wouldn't be getting the much bigger cut against Mosley, and he wouldn't have been able to negotiate a rematch clause. Money decideds how negotiations go. Mayweather's earning power, as well as Pacquiao's, has zero to do with belts at this point in their careers.
I don't think he cares about belts at this stage of his career. He's already won so many. He needs no added leverage in the negotiations with Pac. He's the biggest draw in boxing.
Do you honestly believe that Pac would concede lets say 5% because Floyd has the WBA belt? Cotto's WBO belt didn't help him much in the negotiations. Pac got the lionshare of the pot (as he should of) and he also got to fight at a catchweight of 145lbs. In this day and age PPV numbers will always be the underlying factor when it comes down to negotiating big fights.
Good for Mayweather. I would be an idiot to believe that this is some moral stand against the Alphabets, but this is the right move. This does not really affect the Pac negotiation. If he wins versus Mosley, nobody will care about the belt. Most casual viewers cannot even differentiate between these stupid belts.
Fighting for the titles makes the fight more marketable. In my mind. Why wouldn't he pay the sanctioning fees
Why should any boxer have to pay any fee to be the champ?:? Did the Yankees, Saints, or Lakers have to pay a fee to be recognized as World Champions?:verysad the WBA even created that This content is protected just to make more Champs and charge more fees. I wouldn't pay that **** either.:-(
