"Espinoza does not have any projections on what the Mayweather-Maidana fight will generate on pay per view. But Mayweather needs to get at least 1.5 million to justify the $32 million guarantee that Showtime is giving him as a minimum for each of those six fights in the contract."

From a Tim Smith article in the Ring.

Do you believe this? So is 1.5 million buys the breakeven number?

Certainly not. I guess the break even lies around 900k/1M

The cost of doing business. Showtime is trying to build up its boxing brand. They are willing to take a loss to have the best boxer in the world fight on their network.:deal

Showtime knows what they got into. I dont think it´s as simple as that.
You have the 14 mil gate and a probable 70mil from the PPV sales.
Then there are sponsors to account for as well.
Now we get to merchandise, foreign TV rights and money from reruns and whatnot.

Fight sells 1 mil and they are good. It´s not all about the PPV money. Everything generates.

But having Floyd doesnt open up any other avenues for Showtime. There not going to get millions of extra substribers.

I think they are simply getting their numbers wrong, Floyd is plain and simple an expensive commodity and fighting Maidana isnt going to get past 1 million.

I took the wife last week to see the romantic, heart-rending tear-jerker Captain America: The Winter Soldier. One of the previews was an ad for Mayweather-Maidana. My wife leans over to me and says "Who is Maidana?"

I know, a lot of casual boxing fans won't know Maidana, but Showtime is gonna need quite a few casual boxing fans to buy this PPV in order to get 1.5 million buys.

Hbo were right in not committing to a long term contract with Floyd where he could be fighting mismatches

If they're relying on the fight doing 1.5, they're going to be disappointed. I think one million is as good as this one gets.

Even with Floyd, if you have such a predictable main event, you need a strong undercard to do much more than a million.

I thought the idea of Maidana getting such a miserly guarantee was so they could do a million and Showtime could live with it?

Floyd's 2 fights with Showtime averaged around 1.5 million PPV buys (870K for Guerrero and 2.2 million for Canelo). So Showtime at least for now is on slightly more than even terms if it's true it needs at least 1.5 million buys for each Floyd fight.

i see your point but I dont think you can work it like that because if the fight does 870k or 2.2million Floyd still gets a guarenteed 32 million. Now for the 2.2 million thats fine , but I bet they lost their ass on the 870k and they cannot get that back.

i think 1.5 is a bit much....but i could see it doing 1.2...in which case i think it would still be ok for them....they might be banking on khan and broner to get that extra 200k or so....maybe even help them get to 1.5....well see....

either way showtime put on a good fight with broner/maidana....people watched...and were shocked....and espinoza seems fine with putting maidana in there....let the chips fall where they may
