Mayweather or Ward - who is better?

Floyd in every way.

He is the best boxer of the last 20+ years.

Mayweather won his first title @ 21 years old. Ward won his when he was 25 years old.

Floyd just went up to 154 Lbs to fight Cotto, Ward brought Dawson down to 160Lbs.

Ward is a great boxer but not on the level of Mayweather yet....although he does have time on his side.

I give a slight advantage to pretty boy floyd. It is tough to see anyone better than him. And I like Ward a lot. Ward is a much better inside fighter though, and goes for the KO still. Floyd lost that killer instinct a long time ago.

 

I would not say that. Ward on the inside is something you don't see come around often. His short left hook is killer, and Floyd does not have that. Floyd does not bully people around (anymore at least since he was in his early 20's), but dances around instead. Not saying one is better than the other when it comes to winning, but still.

Mayweather but i think Ward is a very good second

 

I think by the time Ward gets to Mayweathers age,he'll have a better record.

As for who's better...hmmm...id say Mayweather, but Ward is elite too obviously.

 

There is no one in LHW that can propel Ward to have a better resume.

AA is at the level of Ortiz in terms of achievements. He is a stayed at home fighter whose best win is shot Taylor.

Froch is at the level of Corrales and i'm being very generous with this with wins over pascal and bute.

Kessler is at the level of Hatton.

Ward is definitely elite but just bc he fought his rivals in a single weight class doesn't mean he is even close to Floyd in terms of resume as TS suggested.

 

well , Ward seems to be a complete fighter who pretty much cleaned his division. That's something that u don't see too often in boxing. Besides he beat the champ fom LHW , indeed at 168 but Chad said that he can do that weight and he also said that he felt comfortably at 168.

As for Floyd , he can't be matched by any fighter , period. His defensive skills and his ring I.Q are very high but I think Ward is a more versatile fighter with a better arsenal, especially on the inside fight.:yep

 

youre probably thinking of Floyd fighting prime for prime fighters at welterweight, where him and Pacquioao probably arent top 10. Mayweather is considered the GOAT at 130 if not hes at least top 5 not many people will beat him there which is his prime

The last 5-8 years is the first time the division has been global.

Previously it was almost a UK national title. Americans skipped from MW to LHW because there was no prestige in this new division.

Then Beyer, Ottke and Calzaghe held titles defending against poor opposition for many years.

Right at the end of Joe's era did we see some higher level of competition when Kessler came into the division and swept away all the opposition which had been at the top before like Beyer, Lucas, Haussler etc.

He cleaned out the division and this forced Calzaghe to get in the first top fight of his life. He won and the rest is history.

Right now the division is even stronger. This is without a doubt the strongest it has been historically. That doesn't mean Ward is better than Calzaghe, but Calzaghe is definitely better than the UK champs who took turns fighting for the title were. Just that now it is not just Calzaghe and Kessler (which was a historically strong duo) - now the top is even wider.

Also look at what happens when people from other divisions meet the 168ers...

Abraham, Pavlik, Taylor, Miranda etc... and you will see what happens to Pavlik..

Or from above... Johnson, Dawson, Pascal etc.

All of them dominant in their divisions... but getting smashed when they even look at the 168 division.
