Mayweather-Ortiz: who are you going for? *now with a poll*

    So, we're not far away from the fight now. It'll likely be the biggest of the year and, despite the disparity in skill levels, there are some things that make this fight interesting.

    So, who do you think will win and why? Please avoid lazy generalisations like "Floyd is levels above" and "Ortiz is too big and powerful", and give some real depth to your analysis.

    Anyone who's seen my posts since this fight was announced knows I think Mayweather will basically walk this. Ortiz might be bigger, but I don't think he applies pressure particularly intelligently. He lacks a jab to keep Mayweather busy and off-balance, and he can't throw in combination without losing balance or falling in.

    What he will do early is throw a lot of hard shots, which will give him a slight edge while Floyd warms up. He won't land a lot, but he will be outworking the older man. He might land once or twice, but Floyd will always answer back, especially with the stinging straight right.

    By the fourth or fifth round, Floyd will be using superior position to keep Victor off-balance, and punishing him whenever he opens up. By the tenth, it'll be a slow dissection, with Ortiz reduced to wild swinging with only fleeting success.

    Ortiz doesn't have the poise, experience or skill to counteract what Floyd does. He's facing a guy who punches correctly, is rarely off-balance, almost never out of position and who can fight nearly any way he needs to.

    Basically, the few advantages Ortiz has will be undone by the middle rounds, and Floyd will likely cruise to a wide points decision, like 9-3.

    Ortiz starts well, tagging Floyd in the opening rounds. From the 3rd, Mayweather takes over, makes Ortiz miss badly and starts to get thru with his straight right. The southpaw stance is met with the check left hook early on, and Ortiz starts to swell up. From the 8th or so, the only question is will Floyd get the stoppage, and he does in the 11th.

    But I hope Ortiz sparks him!

    I've gone through the stylistics on this fight too many times. Floyd should stop Ortiz. Whenever he wants.

    But I reckon; Floyd UD 118-110. With a few kds, 118-109.

    Ortiz is going to apply alot of pressure coming with the feints and throwing the backhand alot. Coming in at angles and trying to rough jr up. We ain't sure what floyd will do, he says he is gonna be on the backfoot or come forward so I expect floyd to win and getting dropped twice in the process. If Ortiz wins by ko there will be no shock At all.

    Ortiz is going to fight like a beast, he'll do alot better than people are saying. i think Floyd will take it but it won't be easy

    You and jpab are exempt from posting if you choose. Or you could copy and paste from elsewhere. But it's good to get the predictions down right before the fight, so we can all cast it up later.

    I really want to say Ortiz, purely because I just have a feeling. But every single aspect of the fight says Floyd dominates pretty comfortably. Bit vague now so I'm gonna make a very bold, accurate prediction in a few hours.. watch this space...

    I actually think Ortiz will stink the joint out and it will be a poor fight. He'll try and fight smart and clever but he hasn't got the ability to it so he'll just throw very little that's effective. Floyd will be a bit rusty and will get frustrated at Ortiz not giving him the aggressive recklessness he was counting on so the fight will linger on with Floyd getting a late stoppage (Ortiz is likely to unravel comically late on however fighting cautiously early on he might have alot in the tank so he'll hang on for a wide UD defeat).

    That's an interesting view actually. I hadn't considered Ortiz's lack of character in the ring. He really REALLY dislikes being hit. Soon as Floyd stings him with the right, maybe he'll disengage like he did against Peterson.
