Pacquiao fought Oscar without at catchweight at 147. His fight right after Cotto, Pacquiao fought Clottey at 147 with no catchweight. Pacquiao also attempted to get Mayweather to fight him at a catchweight after he fought Cotto. I do agree with you about the dangerous fighter theory. Pacquiao has no problem fighting effectively at 147, which has been proven. However, once his team sees a guy they think presents some real danger, they start demanding catchweights. It seems obvious why that is.
Fine Lance, name me a fight where Mayweather handicapped his opponent. Remember to differentiate between handicapping your opponent and refusing to handicap yourself.
My favourite part, was where Pacquaio beat DLH at 147lbs, refused to figuht Shane Mosley unless Shane could make 142lbs, but was happy to give the less dangerous Miguel Cotto a fight at 145lbs, before fighting the even less dangerous Joshua Clottey at 147lbs. Fun, isn't it.
What exactly do you call his fight vs. JMM? OH I got it, you added a convenient caveat of your own, about supposedly NOT handicapping himself by not losing the 2 pounds to make weight. You can easily add fighting a career JrWW like Hatton at 147 as a handicap, but I'm sure you'll find SOMEWAY to make that not count. Like I said, pathetic.
maybe yes, maybe no. i just wanted this fact (that cotto asked pac to go up 7 and he goes down 1) not to get lost on this debate. this fight at 145 was cotto's term for this fight to happen.
Like I said,as long as he's the the physically smaller fighter and the A-side......he's well within his right to demand it. If the other guy feelsthey can't perform effectively with it, they are also well within their right not to accept it and move on. If they do accept it, then they don't have the right to make their lameass excuaes after the fact. Seriously, it's just pathetic.
i understand where people r coming from but, pac never weighs more than 145 on weigh-ins. catchweights were appropiate with oscar, margarito. the size difference is relevant. the only fighter where he may have weight drained unfairly was cotto. de la hoya and margarito r 154 pounders. pac barely makes 147. but then again 145 is welterweight even if cotto was weight drained for their fight, still is 147
Hatton had won a world title at 147lbs Lance. I know you spit on the idea of world titles these days, but that does validate the fight some what.
Dude, there are 4-5 belts available. Beating a guy ranked in the lower ten might fly with you (when convenient i'm sure), but I still see boxers, not belts. It's weird, with ALL the complaining posters do about so many belts per division, to many of you STILL act like all are legit world champs. I stopped doing that a long time ago. Then again, I'm not someone barely out of my teens (not a dig at you, swear).
Shane was never in the mix. He was desperate to land a big fight, hence his "I'll make that weight" BS. And Cotto was LESS dangerous at 145 then Shane would be at 142? Did I read that right? :huh
Pacquaio fought DLH in December, Mosley beat Margo in Jan. Mosley then went to the WildCard to try and negotiate a fight with Pac. All this came from a Roach interview on Youtube. Mosley said he couldn't make that weight, Freddie told him then there'd be no fight. Can't be a dig at me, I'm still in my teens True, but there was a clamour for Hatton to fight Floyd after RH's KO of JLC. Cotto was tied up with the up-coming Mosley bout, and Hatton was the logical choice.
What's really pathetic is that you don't understand a very basic concept. That's not really surprising given your history. Fact of the matter is, Marquez called Mayweather out. It would've have been impossible for Mayweather to go down to 135. Marquez had to come up in weight if that's the fight he wanted. Whether Mayweather came in at 144 or 164, physically, Marquez would have still been the same. He didn't handicap Marquez. What he did do was refuse to handicap himself. Losing the weight could've taken something out of him. Now he deserved to be criticised, but he didn't handicap Marquez. I'm not even sure why you would even bring up the Hatton fight. Hatton never even requested a catchweight, and fighting at 147 meant he just had to cut less weight. You mention Hatton bein a career JWW, well Mayweather only had a few fights above 140 when he fought Hatton. In fact, when Mayweather made his pro debut at 130, Hatton had already been for fighting for a year or two at 140. I'm not sure how it's a handicap for Hatton to cut less weight to fight a guy who walks around at about 150 lbs,at 147 lbs; especially when you consider he didn't even ask for a catchweight. Are you telling me that Mayweather is handicapping himself in his fight against Cotto? Is Pacquiao handicapping Bradley due to the fact that the fight will take place at the full WW limit?
How about agreeing on a catchweight with JMM, and then showing up 2 pounds over. Had contract revised the night before so Floyd could avoid paying heavier fines. ***** ass move if you ask me. At least Pac and his opponents agreed on a weight and kept their word. :deal
Shane was right in the mix when he KO'd Margarito, one month after Pac stopped Oscae atsch Shane was recognised as the number 1 WW in the world. You read it right, but you got the context wrong. Mosley was seen as dangerous, fresh off of his obliteration of Margarito. Thus he was offered 142/143lbs as the weight. Cotto was seen as less dangerous than Mosley at this point, due to his loss to Margarito and his life and death struggle with Clottey. Thus he was offered 145lbs.
