From the gorilla dog's mouth. He said it directly to Cotto in the ring after the decision was rendered, and repeated it in additional interviews this past week.

It's surprising there hasn't been a thread about that fact yet.

For YEARS he held on to the claim that Emanuel Augustus was the toughest opponent he'd ever faced as a professional, which led many to criticize him for a perceived intentional slight of Jose Luis Castillo.

Now, he has relinquished that claim and pushed Cotto ahead of him.

    Mayweather's personal list:

    1) Cotto
    2) Augustus
    3) Castillo, first time? (it surely has to be, although he hasn't ever come out and said it)
    4) :conf DLH? Judah through four? Corley? Castillo II?

Bear in mind that # of rounds won on the ten point must system on official or unofficial scorecards can NOT necessarily be pointed to as an indication of the overall "closeness" or "toughness" of a fight. :nono

I still have Castillo ahead. He doesn't admit to it because his ego won't allow him to say he had a close fight.

    There has.

Castillo for me easily occupies the number one spot, since he's the only person ever to beat Mayweather on my scorecards.

And I agree with Leon. The Castillo fight probably pains him, because he knows there's a strong case for a Castillo win. He'd rather forget and not allow the mention of that fight to circulate amongst fans; hence why he's pushing Augustus and Cotto to the front of the queue, because ultimately, no fan in their right mind will say he lost those.

:verysad :verysad Cotto was shot and he lost to Clottey and was dry before this fight (weight-drained) and was no better than Ortiz. So, I think he's just being nice.

Then whatever thread that was didn't even mention Augustus' name, which is nonsense in this context. :conf

I did a keyword search for his name (seemed a bit more narrow and more manageable than using either Mayweather's or Cotto's name as a keyword and having to sift through the many threads made in the past week, dig? ;)) and the search results turned up no new threads about this topic since Cinco De Mayo.

This is the General, IB. 90% of us don't even know how to spell Augustus' name. No search function in the world will understand what we write.

He called Hatton his toughest fight too after the fight. In both occasions he's part been gracious in victory. Corley and Mosley landed the biggest single shots on him. Judah and DLH built up slight points leads. Augustus, Castillo and Cotto pushed him throughout fights

BTW he called Castillo the smartest guy he faced

Well, if some knucklehead made a thread about Mayweather calling Cotto the toughest victory of his career and excluded Augustus' name altogether (even though it's critical to context, as it was Mayweather finally bumping Augustus/Burton's name from that revered pedestal) then it wasn't really a thread about this topic of Cotto surpassing him, was it? Whatever thread you're referring to was only partially informative, and therefore unworthy of even being acknowledged. :deal

Didn't Augustus use the Burton last name in that fight? Augustus was something that happened later I'm pretty sure...

Castillo, Cotto,..............Augustus. Castillo and Cotto were all three competitive fights. Augustus gave him problems but took a beating.
