Not against Margarito you won't.

Maybe if it was like Byrd against some fat heavyweight you'd be able to get off a 3-4-5 punch combination without reprisal. Certainly not a guy who lives for that give and take combat. As soon as you hit Margarito there is a punch coming back in return. You might get off a 1-2 and get out before he lands but that's pushing it. 3 punches? I'd like to see that.

Granted he might show up lethargic and let Cotto steal the first 4 rounds. All bets are off in that case. But if he comes out hungry at the opening bell Cotto will have significant trouble landing 3 punch combinations. He'll likely be throwing one punch at a time and moving.

Clottey wasn't on his bike early on either. Clottey was using his guard to block punches while coming back with fast counters.

Clottey defensively is hard to hit. Cotto is not. Cotto uses a split guard and it's easier to penetrate that guard than it is Clottey's shell guard. Both styles have pros/cons.

The shell guard is better defensively but the split guard allows you to get more leverage/rotation into your punches. Especially hooks which are a big favorite for Cotto.

With a split guard you can twist your body and your elbow and forearm into a punch. That increases the damage on it significantly. And that's the style Cotto prefers. So Margarito will be facing a harder punching opponent that will ultimately be easier to hit.

Clottey's style and durability allowed him to stand inside with Margarito and cover up. And it allowed him to use handspeed to land flashy counters that by and large didn't do much damage. This is very different than throwing combinations while on the move. At some point Cotto's going to have to set his feet and that split guard will be tested.

Margarito has a good beard no denying that. But Clottey is not a big puncher precisely due to the fact that his shell defense doesn't allow for much rotation on the elbows/forearms.

I think Cotto's leaky defense is going to cost him against a significantly bigger, significantly stronger opponent. Margarito is also a terrific finisher. If he hurts Cotto it's going to be over soon after. I've yet to see Cotto in a real fight where he hasn't been tagged cleanly. I also suspect that Mosley's punch disappeared a long time ago. I don't think he even hits as hard as Zab Judah. That may be attributing to this idea that Cotto's chin problems have subsided since moving up.

 

You probably won't see me on july 27th as this will be a big weekend for me and my friends. I might be out of the area for the weekend.
