Laing fought Duran 7 years before he beat Barkley, thats what I mean about Duran still being a live fighter, not a washed up shell. Ring Magazine had this as the Upset of the Year

 

I'm not sure what your point is. Everyone who followed Duran back then, knew he went into a tailspin after losing to SRL and it took him a while to get out of it. While he was in this tailspin he lost to Laing. But that certainly wasn't the best version of Duran, not by a long shot and he provide that both years before and years after.
