I agree it was nothing new and was perhaps a change that needed Hatton to rethink his strategy post-Kostya. I for one still feel slightly sorry for Billy Graham, time and time again you would hear him tell Hatton that he was 'smothering his own work' whilst in the corner of recent fights, yet for whatever reason Hatton would resort to smothering and clinching more than previously. What I would say is Hatton definitely looked fitter, Sky Sports commented he looked more like a boxer/athletic in the ring this time around and I agree. I couldn't help wonder under the old regime was Hatton too *weights* intensive, was it making him sluggish/slow? Recent fights Hatton tended to gas rounds 7+ What I also enjoyed pre fight was Hatton's pad work/combinations with Floyd Snr. He showed great handspeed, footwork and movement in those sessions, and I was slightly dissapointed he didn't show more of that in the fight (didn't help Paulie was around Hatton's waist all night). I also felt the Las Vegas altitude work in the camp helped a great deal with Hatton's freshness. At no stage did Hatton appear to gas and I would hope this had to do with Snrs work out in the mountains, even though Hatton was never really tested. I liked Mayweather Snr's approach in the corner on fight night, he was a calm assertive presence, and didn't feel Hatton looked uncomfortable with him in the corner. I like the way Mayweather is also stearing Hatton away from the bigger fighters such as Oscar, and already is aware that Hatton is a 140lb fighter. This too was a huge issue for Billy Graham who had always maintained Hatton was best at 140 not 147. Mayweather Snr certainly added a freshness to the Hatton set-up and no doubt revitalised him. Whilst there was no real difference from the Ricky Hatton we saw moving thorugh the LW division, think Tackie, Oliveira, Stewart, Phillips etc.. there was certainly a fresher quicker Hatton than we have seen for sometime, and that surely has to do with the change of camp. Mayweather took an aging warhorse in Hatton and has hopefully steered him back into the fight game on the correct course for some big bouts at 140lbs over the next 1-2 years. Congrats to both Hatton and Mayweather for making it work.
I always thought of Floyd Sr. and a mumbling and stuttering fool and perhaps that's true but I think he is an amazing trainer. He not only knows the boxing end of it but he also gets his fighters in marvelous condition. A fighter with Floyd Sr. in his corner has a great asset. He's a boxing savant.:smoke :smoke
