What difference would it make if he didnt have a belt??? He is the undisputed welterweight champion, and as much as the haters want that not to be the case it is..Belt or no they still have to fight.

Floyd will vacate before fighting Berto. The fight offers him nothing at the moment in terms of prestige, legacy, and most importantly, cash.

Then again, I doubt the WBC will ever make him vacate because of the big purses he brings in. Crooked Sulaiman will always make special exceptions for cash cow fighters, as evidenced by De La Hoya holding the 154 belt hostage until "The World Awaits."

But he's not defending the Ring belt. He has never been a big fan, especially now that Golden Boy owns the magazine. If you noticed, the only belt he has ever DEFENDED has been the WBC (he won Judah's IBF belt, which rightly belonged to Baldomir...then beat CB anyway).

And like the poster said above, he is the true champ at 147, belt or no belt. I don't know if he's willing to be introduced as the beltless challenger if a fight with Cotto ever came to fruition.

Mayweather is all about the money, for me he has the talent to go down as one of the top 3, im talking SRR, Peps, Armstrongs of the world he could get into that elite grup. He has the tools and has the division on names, he just doesnt have the will.

But money does talk and if Cotto beats Margarito, PBF will not be able to ignore the cash being thrown into the Mayweather/Cotto pot. Im still optimistic this fight can happen.

i also dont think he can be slagged off for fighting Hatton, who is one if the biggest names in the game and linear 140 champ, history is littered with linear champ vs smaller linea champ contests. Beating DLH again though proves nothing.

As for Berto, he is nowhere near ready for likes of Floyd, but if h plays by the WBCs rude, fighting the correct eliminators and so on, he will deserve his crack at the green strap. If Floyd has to vacate to do so, then so beit.

That what I mean ... would he accept being introduced as the challenger or having to walk into the ring first ...

I know that he's still the champion, but its deeper than that when you're in a superfight.

No one has to unify belts to be considered the champion of the division ... that has never been an unwritten rule in boxing. The lineage comes first, the quality of opposition, and a belt.
