I know this will likley cause a stir, but it is just an opinion!
I consider Floyd to be the best ever, or at least in STRONG contention for such an accolade. The reasoning is simple, although many other atg fighters certainly beat Floyd in a number of departments, such as Robinsons two handed power, and Ali's immense athleticism for a heavyweight, Floyds defence and ring IQ trump them all. None of the other ATG fighters ( and im not even going to mention Floyds 0 as it means nothing when compared to the records of older generation fighters who faught wars every week) could fight so many top class fighters without 'properly' going down, and without ever getting marked up. Think about it, every sport has progressed over the decades, athletes have gotten quicker in the olympics, and individual sports have gained new insights, training techniques, and in boxings case - defensive techniques. Sure fighters since the start of boxing would have utilised shells and shoulder rolls, its for some a natural defence, but what Floyds family did, which was perfected by Floyd himself, was master the technique and all that comes with it, where it is , certainly up to now, unpenetrable. I read just now on ring tv the chap talking about how great Floyd is, but how hes no Leonard, and how Leonard could do everyhting Floyd can, but hits harder. Sure he hits harder, but Leonard CANT even hold a candle to floyds defence, its nonsense to say he can, Leonard was great in HIS areas but he was cut hurt marked, KOD, even outpointed by a slugger, would Mayweather and his defence be outpointed by anyone? Although smaller, Mayweather completely outclassed Marquez who is an all time great mexican fighter. I remember thinking at the end, Floyd realy does have an extra gear in terms of sheer talent that Ive not seen even closley replicated across all of boxing, except for Ward perhaps recently, but even he takes some blows, and of course was dropped by Darnell Boone ( it can happen to anyone but I cant even imagine seeing Floyd on the canvas). I think another reason why Floyd doesnt get appropriate credit, is that everyone has a deep lying bias towards their own generation. For example, my music is crap compared to the real music of his time my dad says, and of course, the fighters of his time where the best ever. The chap undermining Floyd in comparisson to Leonard is obviously of Leonards generation. Truth is, NO ONE, has matched floyds defence, and on that merit alone, as defence is half of boxing, surley he deserves to be in contention at LEAST, for such a honour. I mean, I know im negating my whole point, but im not saying he IS the best ever, I just think its insulting to the man the people who think that its laughable to claim such a thing?
ps - to the obvious Castillo remarks, maybe thats why he cant be sure fire the best, but cmon, he was young, and its not like he got beat up now is it? - which is the whole reason why I claim he has a stake for the crown, even in 'losing' as a boy, he avoided getting beat up!

    Thats what I think anyhoo..

It's one thing showing great defense against the likes of Chavez and prime DLH, like Pea. It's another doing it vs no hopers. I mean, his great defense will always be there but even a past prime Cotto found cracks in it, and most of those ATGs had to contend with so much more.

O god, had up so quickly! I really do apologise I thought I would make a quick post in the few minutes I have before I got to go out. Read it back after I posted it and realised how bad it was. Certainly did not expect to be shamed so fast :p

That is certainly true, but Pernell still dropped points desicions, whereas I really cant see that happening to a healthy Floyd.

He dropped points decisions when washed up, and even that was arguable till Tito. He never lost one in popular opinion in his prime, like Floyd did to Castillo. And Castillo was Chavez' sparring partner

Yes, I think a fight with him and Ray Robinson is a 50/50 fight.
