One fight has nothing to do with the other. Duran doesn't get much credit for beating a virtually prime ATG WW, 2 divisions north of his prime weight... because of his next fight with him? That's weird logic.
Hey George, I too have trouble following your logic and reason … The SRL win for Duran is the best on his resume. Ranking on resume and achievements as you state is precisely the reason Mayweather is held back. You have him high at #26 for your main criteria imo. He is off the charts with everything else, so it would seem that you would argue for this instead … His resume is miles away from the comparisons you are drawing in the OP from the other ATG's you mention. And you further mention May vs other ATG's throughout history at WW? Seems to me his best weight is below that, probably 130, as he would have a mountain to climb H2H at 135, before even talking about 147 imo … maybe we just disagree here, all good tho
It's not weird logic, he gave up in the second fight. The first fight was phenomenal but it was him quitting and losing by such a way in the rematch but I still have him at 20 pfp.
It's not degrading Mayweather by having him at 147 (not intentionally anyway) but I feel he accomplished more than that at any of his other weights. Tbh the potshot defensive Mayweather was the better fighter imo because May was a top 10 defence Specialist and had enough pop to keep people honest (eg. Pacquiao and Del a Hoya) whilst the aggressive Mayweather simply didn't have the tenacity offensively to be a true ring assassin like Hagler or Duran. Fun Fact: In my original list I had Mayweather as top 10 material but then I redid it from top 15 to fifty and ended up dropping him down. His Longevity, staying undefeated and being a 5 weight champion are the stats that put him higher up on my list. (More than his résumé) Thanks
Out of curiosity where is jimmy Wilde on your list? On another note some posters start a thread with their top 50. Some do it in installments 41-50 then 31-40 etc. as a reveal inviting criticism and dialogue. If you have any interest I would love to see your list and and discus the merits of inclusion exclusion and placements.
Got it. Fair post .. For me, I do not put to much significance in the Pac fight as that fight was for 2010 , not 2015 .. And ODLH was prime in '97, so 2007 is difficult ask of him imo… "His Longevity, staying undefeated and being a 5 weight champion are the stats that put him higher up on my list. (More than his résumé)" … all great points ..
This makes zero sense. Losing a later fight doesn't take away from the initially victory. That is totally backwards logic, and makes ZERO sense. Does Holyfield not get credit for beating Bowe the second time because he lost fights 1 and 3? Does Frazier not get credit for beating Ali because he lost fights 2 and 3? Does Pac not get credit for his earlier fights with Marquez cause he got KTFO in his last fight? We could go on and on, but the point is, it's crazy logic to go about things that way.
All good examples btw, but none of them litterally quit in those rematches. I'm not giving no credit to Duran for that win, just not enough for a top 10 placement or enough to be above Ray Leonard. A good example is with Jimmy Bivins who was an underrated fighter who beat both Ezzard Charles and Archie Moore but I don't place them above either of them because in the whole his résumé isn't better. SRl's was better than Duran's.
No problem. I have Jimmy Wilde at 33 and I was gonna make a thread about it anyway. Just to see if I can learn anything new (I'm not an expert by any means, just perhaps enough to order them) about the fighters I ranked.
@ 130? Chavez might be there with him in resume but head to head Julio peaked at '35. Floyd had a big enough punch to make Chavez respect him in that weight class.
Lol very few of us (since I am not one I should say them) are experts although many of us (lol I qualify here unfortunately) do pretend to be from time to time. 33 seems a might higher up than I would go, I would think 20-30 range at worst...but I don’t have my list (old one by the way) near me
This is highly debatable and I would probably disagree with it as I would personally rather have Duran's. Why? First, they have 2 completely different careers. Duran was an extremely active fighter, Ray was not .. Duran did most of his work at LW and dominated a division up there with the best of all time in how he did it. However, he did not have the great names as SRL did,, But SRL used his popularity to go in and out of retirement several times over 2 decades to pick and choose who he wanted to fight and when .. Duran did not. Sometimes it worked, Hagler, Lalonde(which I do not really count as it was a joke in terms) and sometimes it didn't( Hearns 2, Norris, Camacho) AND They are miles apart in the Activity dept. , which I am a huge proponent of in ranking. Even more so I will take Duran's accomplishment H2H more than SRL because Duran went up and beat SRL at his best weight.. and Ray avenged in the rematch and later
Fair enough, maybe I just don't know as much about Duran's opponents as I do Leonard's. And excellent point about Leonard using his popularity.
