There is an interesting article on Boxingnews24 about Mayweather stating that if he came back and beat GGG the fans would simply look at the 168lb division rather than than focus on the achievement of going to MW. The clamour would be Floyd to go up further which would inevitably lead to Kovalov being asked to boil down. I think it is a valid point. When a fighter jumps a weight we want them to keep jumping. Example was Broner SFW & LW but because of the Mayweather factor he jumped 2 divisions and got exposed. This really illustrates the super human achievement of Pacquio going from Fly to LMW, but we still wanted me. However we are more sympathetic to GGG not many have asked him to jump up to Kovalov rather stay at MW and unify. Same Kovalov not calling for him to move up and face Uysk, etc
I see your point, but with Floyd he seem's to avoid the current best at a weight and will face somebody else there. Stuff like that is unacceptable if you're calling yourself TBE. He'll face Cotto @ LMW, but not Lara, Andrades or Martinez (who said he'd drop to 154). He seem's to fight guys who suit his style rather than facing THE MAN at that weight. Dollars to donuts he'd make GGG fight under 154, and then he'd face someone at MW who holds a few belts but is an easier touch.
I note your if he got a MW title any SMW plans would be achieved by dragging Sturm to 161lb, on the basis he hands over his new WBA strap However long before Floyd SRL dragged Donny Lalonde down to 168lb in the 2 belts for the price of one SMW & LHW title Whereas SR Robinson went WW to MW and tried LHW without any strings or clauses and came close, but ultimately short
Who do we judge the better achievers - The long term single weight dominators Or The multi weight jumpers
Both are awesome achievements. If you dominate one weight-class, but clear out the old blood on your way up, clear out the lot behind you and beat the man behind them, that's remarkable. Multi-weight jumpers who beat the man and do it at the correct weight with no issues are awesome as well.
