Indeed, to put that into perspective, lets compare it to Oscars fights with the not so big names and some even quite big. Has Clottey even been ppv before Pac?

    DLH VS:
    Ike Quartey( 2/99) 570,000 buys =$25.7 million
    Pernell Whitaker(4/97) 720,000 buys = $28.8 million
    Hector Camacho(9/97) 560,000 buys = $22.4 million
    Shane Mosley(6/00) 590,000 buys = $29.5 million
    Yory Boy Campas(5/03) 350,000 buys = $17.5 million
    Shane Mosley II( 9/03) 950,000 buys = $48.4 million
    Felix Sturm(6/04) 380,000 buys = $19.0 million
Ricardo Mayorga (05/06) 875,000 buys (note, my other source says 925,000)

That said, that was over a decade ago for some of those numbers. PPV and cable tv is a lot more popular now.

Thats exellent......the only thing that made it seem dissapointing was that Arum was talking about it breaking well over a million.....

.....the same is going to hold true here, Shaefer was predicting numbers that would come close to DLH-Mayweather, which was ridiculous.

The expectations were set to high in both fights, but the reality is that both fights did, and will do quite well.

Except for Mayweather-Pac, there is'nt any fight out there that could come close to breaking 2 million.

What PPVs did Mosley headline prior to the DLH fight?

I remember Arum & Ross Greenburg saying they will be very happy if it reaches a million and consider it a success.

The PPV predictions ranged anywhere from 500k-1mil, it hit the middle. Not too bad at all.

It usually takes the cable companies, satellite providers four days to come up with a number they report to the promotional body but Iole puts in one phone call to report this number on the Monday following the event right, lol?

Oh and to whomever said it was boring, to each their own, I found it pretty exciting how Shane was taken out of his game plan..

None as far as I know. Obviously the DLH fight boosted his popularity by a mile, he also moved up to a much more glamourous division to make bigger fights happen. However, if Mosley continued knocking guys out as he was in LW after DLH, he could be bigger than Pac & Mayweather by now.

DLH got the people's attention, it was up to him to keep it after that.

In general, the casual fans will rarely come in big numbers to view fighters that are more or less under 140lbs.

If Pacquiao for instance would have stayed at 130, even if he was fighting top notch competition all the time, not sure he'd ever get big numbers, if on PPV...for that matter..P4P #1 or not...

The big audiences come with the irregular casual fans and it's always a much harder sale for a fight with little guys...

The way Floyd fought his last bout sure got more casual fans appreciating his performance in the ring. That will add to his drawing power with the casual crowd, with or without Pacquiao.

Oh you were talking about Mosley being a bigger star than Pac/mayweather pre DLH.

I thought you were also referring to him pre DLH as well.

Im saying that Mosley's popularity now is probably the same level as Pac/PBF popularity pre-dlh.

DLH managed to do 2.4mil buys iwth mayweather, who previously had biggest ppv buys of 375k I believe. DLH in a "mismatch" managed to draw 1.4mil with pac, who previously only did 420k buys.

Mayweather manages to do 1.2mil with Mosley, who previously has done 920k, 500k without Oscar. It's clear DLH is still a much bigger draw than either guy, Pac/Mayweather...no matter what PBF says. lol.

oscar at his peak is still the bigger draw but if Pac and Mayweather continue to fight, those can easily surpass DLH.

Mayweather is averaging like 250k more per PPV than oscar is already.

And the more we make PPV buys that important the more we slowly we move boxing from mainstream.

Don't propagate boxing promoters' greed and control.

I think the promotion is bigger, more people pay for ppv's these days too. If Oscar was around today at his peak he would probably average 1.5mil plus per fight. It does help that the guy has 2 fanbases to rely on, Latino's and American's...so when he fought Mayweather he got the african american crowd in there too. Explains the huge numbers.

This is true, but unless some billionaire comes in, buys out boxing, its orgs and runs it under 1 banner like UFC, theres not much of a solution to it. Huge ppv buys means attention, and although the fight is not free, most can catch a replay and will atleast see it on the news/adverts to keep up with it.

Be nice though if fighters fought 4 times a year, 1-2 on PPV and 1-2 on free TV. The tuneups should not be ppv...Pac-Solis/Diaz on ppv. lol.
