If both of these guys win later this year, this fight will be unbelievable. If Mayweather can beat Cotto, a young, prime and undefeated champion coming off a string of very impressive victories, he cements his name among the top ATG's. If Cotto can pull through and beat the p4p no1 after disposing of a future HOF in Mosley, he will be putting himself in position to be one of the best fighters of our generation. An absolutely massive fight either way. I am amped just thinking about it. It will be the next Chavez v Whitaker, HEarns v Leonard, Hearns v Haggler. Not based on style, but on ability and place in the sport. Two truley elite guys, and most probably future greats going at it both in their primes (mayweather arguably). Where do you think this will rank Mayweather historically if he wins, and where do you think this will position Cotto if he were to pull through?
Come on MSTR are u really thinkin what if Mayweather beats Cotto... i didnt think u had a negative thing to say about Cotto in ya.. lol jks
:good Very good post. I knew it would depend heavily on what Cotto goes on to do, as even with victories over SSM and Judah, it hardly is ATG material. Still, we could potentially be witnessing a battle between to ATG fighters. Out of curiosity Pea, as your knowledge of classics and older fighters is much better then mine, were Hearns and Leonard already considered ATG material at the time they fought, and likewise Chavez v Pernell, or was it after these fights when their total achievements had been taken into account that it became popular opinion. IMO I think we are looking at 2 guys who will go on to be all time greats. I think this fight if it comes off will be a terrific contrast of styles, and will go down as a fight similar to the ones mentioned in my inital post, although I do agree it is too early to be making those copmarisons just now...
I never really viewed Mosely as a matador. He's more a guy who has fast hands, feet, power, good chin and huge determination. The type of guy who would always seem to come out on top in a close fight. Only way to beat Shane I think is to have a counter/ superior style.. Shane always seemed to me to be the type of guy that would welcome exchanges and have a huge advantage due to handspeed. Type of fighter that always looks to get back after he gets hit. Very hungry, active and willing to mix it up in spots that suit him.
