Mayweather vs Cotto, What does Cotto need to do to win this fight?

He needs to be aggressive but box very consistently. For instance, his money punch is his left hook to the body but do not rely on that punch to obsessively, let it flow as you stick your jab, move on light feet. Please do not rush in or bully cause Hatton tried it and Oscar tried it and it was not worthy. Floyd is the kind of seasoned virtuoso like Pernell Whitaker who can fight a much bigger and stronger man like JC Vasquez and still outbox him completely... I seriously think that a cold minded, coll and smart Miguel Cotto can actually beat Floyd like he beat Shane. Impose your strength on him, make him back up but do not fall into traps, trap him yourself.

If I was Pedro Diaz, I'd honestly tell Cotto to use the old Latin trick which is mostly forgotten now. Tito Trinidad used to do it alot with quicker opponents. You land punches on the opponents hip bone, take their legs away.

Cotto should focus on taking Floyd's base away from him if he can, and then go upstairs once he has a target which can't move as much, nor punch as hard.

I expect Cotto to do that as Cotto doesn't mind throwing low blows and it worked in his favor for Judah. Expect Cotto to get a little dirty in this one.

 

Be effective with his jab. It all starts there. If Mayweather is able to time Cotto's jab as quickly as Manny was able to, it's going to be a long demoralizing night for Miguel.

 

it will be hard for Cotto to win. He is shopworn and I would say controlled aggression and use his jab. A busy fight using his jab and throwing a lot of punches, but still Mayweather is so fast he will counter him and win a decision. Cotto is not a big guy, so Mayweather will not have trouble with his size. Cotto is a style guy. He does well with some styles and not well with others. With Mayweather his style is not that great.

work on his stamina and pressure Floyd effectively throughout the whole fight (basically do what JLC did)

 

Find a way to land his body shots. He'll have to box a little and bang a lot. He won't beat Floyd in a boxing match but he can switch gears in there and keep Floyd guessing. The problem I see is Floyd's speed. Timing can nullify speed but Floyd has both. With the lack of speed on Miguel's end he'll have to find angles that allow him to get at Floyd body to slow him down in the later rounds. Everyone knows you have to have the jab working at least a little bit to have some success against Floyd... you don't need a Larry Holmes jab.... but enough to keep Floyd defensive while you're setting up the real offense right behind the jab.

Body work will be key for Cotto and I think he'll have some success if he has a consistent focus on the body.... and starts early.
