The Duran who was razor-sharp and focused against Palomino and SRL I would attack intelligently and relentlessly and bully Mayweather into the ropes. The fact that Duran was extraordinary body puncher would serve him well here too. Mosley, a renowned body puncher in his own right, did not have the energy or wherewithall to work inside to Mayweather's body. A 28-29 year old Cholo is a whole different animal than a starting to become shopworn 38-year old Sugar Shane. In a 12-round fight I see Duran winning a clear cut UD. In 15-rounds Duran might coast at the end if he is sure he has the fight locked up on points. If he went for the knockout he just might get it. Duran would win.
Show me some evidence of this. What I see is Leonard standing, moving a little, jabbing, Duran tracking constantly and eventually slipping a shot and using that as an opportunity to get inside. Duran is forcing Leonard into an inside fight which makes it appear as if Leonard is trading. Leonard never initiated this action. He couldn't keep "optimal range". He also talks about Leonard circling to the Duran's right and jabbing. See how that worked out. Yes, exactly. Leonard changed his style post-Montreal to deal with Duran. Much more lateral movement. He wasn't slugging before. He was a stand-up boxer before. It's irrelevant anyway since, like I say, Mayweather doesn't have the ability to imitate that kind of movement. No, I don't, though I think there is a clear decline in Duran which you can't ignore. But you seem to take the "Leonard fought the wrong fight" "Leonard brawled with him" **** seriously. Really? Even Jesus Chavez managed to hit Floyd. Leonard can't hit Duran. Leonard is faster, stronger and a better fighter than Mayweather, yet Duran totally neutralised all of his offensive output from range. And you see Mayweather landing consistently with his pot-shot/hold routine? Like lora said, you're overlooking Duran's slipping skills here. What do you mean not keeping distance? You can't keep distance when a guy is constantly getting inside on you! Show me some big shots he wings. I don't see it. I see him throwing jabs, jab-rights, standard combinations, then flurrying up close as it's his only chance of success. Large chunks of Benitez/Duran were fought on the inside. Duran employed the same basic game plan he usually did: watch for the guy's leads, slip and get inside, time him for the right hand, get inside, etc. The only fight where I saw Duran boxer was vs. Hagler, and even then he brawled when Hagler wanted to. Mayweather is a better infighter than Leonard?? All Mayweather does is hold inside! It makes all your points about lateral movement irrelevant. True, although I disagree about Chavez and strongly about Pep. Still, what they were doing in Montreal was much more advanced fighting.
I thought he won. And I thought he beat Hagler too. I gave Duran the first 2 rounds vs. Hagler. I have on vhs where right after the fight, Leonard said he thought Duran won also.
I agree with you actually, I had Duran winning the fight by 3 rounds or so. I was pretty shocked when the result was announced. I think they were hoping that that would be the end of Roberto. It was a good scrap IIRC, with Duran using the right hand well and there were some pretty big exchanges leaving Sims rocky on more than one occasion.
I had the Hagler fight even. Just more evidence of Hagler's convoluted mental state going into big fights. He could have destroyed Duran had he just walked him down (and he had his best moments when he did - too strong on the inside, too fast), but he had to turn it into a countering contest and ended up nearly losing the ****ing thing.
You always have to assume its the best of both vs each other & as much as I admire the skills of Mayweather (I feel he`s hands down the best in the last 10 yrs) I have to imagine a Montreal or Palomino Duran at 147 lbs beats Mayweather... I would used to have said by TKO but now I see him going the 12 rd distance with Duran (Floyd never fought 15 & both fought 12 rds so 12 it is) :good
...If they clone Pacquiao a few times and make Mayweather fight three of them at once and he knocks out two and decisions the third, I might entertain him winning this one.
It's **** that i can;t remember the name of the guy now, but a poster in the general was telling me he had Leonard beating Duran in the first encounter as well. Another poster who i do know the name of but i won't say, told me Whittaker-Chavez was a draw.
Thats nothing, damn, what were their names!? I can't remember, but there were like 50 guys in the classic forum one time telling me Duran had stomach cramps in Leonard II and the Hearns fight, so those humiliating losses are void
In my defense i never talk that stuff, and on my offense, you're a clown. There's not many people here who use the stomach cramp excuse, although others are used.
Yeah but that never actually happened...and what teeto is talking about did. You have to try to make the distinction between reality and fantasy Pachilles..there is medication for that I think.
