Ii actually agree with abuffy in that I think Pacquiao chose to box. I think Pac and Roach thought they could counter Mayweather and hurt him. I think Pac landed the most counters I've ever seen landed on Mayweather. I'm specifically saying counters and not just punches. It still wasn't very many in a low output fight, but it was much more than any other fighter. I think Roach and Pac overestimated how many counters they could land and what affect it would have on Floyd. Floyd has a good chin and they needed to wear him down, not spark him out.
I wouldn't mind a rematch, but it was already so hard for the networks, promoters, and casino to agree on anything. It's realistically going to be very hard from a business perspective. I also don't think Roach will come up with a better plan.
Thanks. yeah, there was very little in it though...and I certainly think this does help to bolster my case that many rounds could have gone either way. Some were clear - either Pac hurt Floyd, or Floyd boxed Pac's head off - but many were like round 3.
Well one of the things about it was that since they both tried playing counter puncher, Floyd was on the backfoot, Pacquiao was still coming forward. I think Floyd counter were much easier to see as Pac was walking in. I think Pac's counters were hard to spot since Floyd was moving and some of the punches looked kind of grazing vs full impact. It definitely takes trained eyes to see what they were both doing.
Yeah, I agree - which is why I mentioned that IMO Mayweather forced Pac to fight his fight by virtue of the fact that he is so uncompromising in his passivity - even if Pac chose to counter punch, it allowed Floyd to adopt the role of defensive counter-puncher, which of course no one is going to beat him at. That example of ring generalship, the fact that he appeared to be fighting his fight, is what may have edged him the close rounds without him actually having to DO much...
