Hey guys. This is my ultimate breakdown of the fight. I put this in an old thread in which I discussed similar ideas for pages and pages, but I figured it was worth drawing attention to the video itself since my views have evolved a lot over the years. This video lays out my theories about the dynamics between Floyd and Manny, particularly their footwork with respect to orthodox-southpaw match-ups. It's not the best edit job but I love technical discussions so hopefully this generates some good discussion! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Z5Mnf9nkB0
great video bro!! Morlaes breaks it down just like i see it. that left hand is way to low all the damn time and Floyd's straight rights are gonna batter that face. Pac best be ready
Great breakdown, really appreciate it man. I already watched it twice. Also I like footage from Morales/Barrera/Marquez:cheers
Beautiful stuff. That is probably a better breakdown than what you'll see from 90% of professional "experts".
Curious. If it is as easy as turning Pacquiao to make him lose the foot position advantage, as Shane Mosley, Morales, and Marquez all say and did... then why did Morales get knocked out 2 times trying to imply the strategy, why did the Mosley get knocked down and lose to a very dominantly decision trying to use that strategy, and why did Marquez lose almost all fights (INCLUDING the third, which I think he won pretty clearly as compubox supports) and was about to be KO'ed in the fourth fight until he caught Pac using that strategy? Obviously, it's not as simple as that. Because, honestly, the gameplan hasn't seemed to have been very effective. And also, Pacquiao didn't lose to Morales because of foot position. It was because Pacquiao didn't know how to negate his jab...he figured it out, and knocked Morales out the next two fights. So, I'm confused? It's just I see what you're saying, and I understand. It logistically makes sense, but... in reality, it hasn't won his opponent's many fights, if any. Only two were Morales and Marquez the fourth fight, which Marquez was losing bad and Morales was a whole other story, back when Pac was one dimensional and had a lot of problems going into that fight.
In the rematch with Morales, he got a bit older and was struggling with the weight, while Manny changed his strategy and started counter-punching more and using his right hook more. The third fight needs no mention. Negating the jab isn't something I saw as very relevant. Morales himself explained that's how he won, and it's clear on film that getting his lead foot outside allowed him to land the jab and the right hand. He used the gameplan from JMM1. The first two JMM fights were close and I think it's clear he won the 3rd. He knocked him out in the 4th the same way. So it's clearly effective. Mosley was too aged to compliment his offense to the lateral movement; JMM 3 right after showed the angle was still relevant. Pacquiao has been arguably beaten 5 times that way, so clearly it's effective. Marquez losing before the KO is exaggerated and not relevant. He had dropped Manny once like that in the 3rd and the whole fight was competitive. And it's not just Manny this applies to, but all southpaws. I mean Freddie Roach and Manny Pacquiao themselves are stressing lead foot positioning for themselves as well. That's how Manny aligns his left. (Also, nobody said it was easy. Only two ATG's have been able to do it.)
Excellent unbiased breakdown. Foot work will be key in this fight I can't stress that enough. I feel that PBF will win that battle he knows how to use proper foot placement and can make more adjustments. His educated footwork is better than Pac's.
If we are going to say Morales, Mosley were old and discredit those wins, then I guess we can say the same for the others as well. It looked as if Morales employed that strategy easy, but as Pacquiao will tell you, a day before the fight, he was struggling to make weight. Therefore, he wasn't allowed to drink or eat anything. Then, he had to take a surprise blood test and blood was drawn from him the day before the fight, when he already hadn't eaten or drank anything. And for those who knows biology, that's horrible for your body. He said the day of the fight, he felt horrible, and when he punched Morales, he didn't have any power. He also fatigued very early (5th round), a sign of dehydration and weakness. Also, differ of opinion, but I thought Marquez won the third fight. Pacquiao was busier, out-landed him, and scored at either a higher or better connect percentage for the 3rd fight. And if we want, we can make excuses for that fight too because he was in horrible financial situation, and his wife was fighting with him and asked for divorce the night of the fight, was refusing to go to the arena with him, be with him, share the room with him, etc. It was bad. Still, I think he won the close decision. But those are if we just want to use the excuses. If not, then we see those who tried to use the strategy repeatedly lost. What about the 4th fight? Why was Marquez losing so badly? To the point his corner was going to call off the fight in the 7th round? Had Pacquiao adjusted? What was it? I just don't think it's as simple as that. And for Mayweather, a fighter with subliminal experience fighting southpaws when compared to Pacquiao fighting orthodox fighter's his entire life...I still think Pac has that advantage when it comes to foot positioning. Also, I 100% agree that foot positioning is important, but I still think Manny has the advantage. He has so much more experience in that area, and it hasn't shown to be a detrimental gameplan against him. Effective, yes. Detrimental, no. He's always found a way to win.
The problem is Pacquiao was in his prime and didn't look weakened. He fought hard for 12 rounds, looked fast, looked mobile. I don't buy that that's why he lost the fight. Especially when against Marquez he struggled against the same tactics. Then again in the 2nd fight. Then the 3rd. Then the 4th. I think it's pretty ridiculous you're denying that lead foot positioning matters, and that it hasn't been effective against Pacquiao. Roach and Pacquiao are admitting it themselves. Whether Floyd can employ that is another story. Something tells me you didn't watch the other half that discusses that.
It's more than just educated footwork, it's movement. Will Mayweather be able to move out the way? When Bernard Hopkins is 80 years old, he'll have the most educated footwork in boxing, but that still won't help him against a young man.
thats not the biggest key point. its pac throwing the same double jab jab just to throw that left hand combination that Mayweather will time by round 4. and with pac not throwing many body shots at all, how will he adjust?? thats the key
