This is a very true post that people don't seem to understand. Floyd has problems with fighters Jones would humiliate. Floyd is not capable of doing to the top notch figthers he faces what Jones was.

Hamed did what he did to much lower level fighters than Jones did as well.

This may sound strange, but I think it depends largely on how you define power.

If it's the impact of a fighter's punch against an opponent, then I agree a 9 or probably a 9.5 is appropriate. On the other hand, if you define it more technically as heavier hands, then I think it's more like an 8.5.

I say that because I think Jones benefited largely from his speed and angles, and guys simply weren't seeing the incoming fire. That obviously negated their defense mechanisms for taking a punch.

The McClellan example is a very good one. Both Jones and G-Man accumulated some very impressive KOs at 160-168 (and Roy a few at 175), but I'd say in terms of natural power against a heavy bag -- or an opponent's chin -- McClellan was more than a .5 harder hitter than Jones. He was more conventional and did hit guys with stuff they could see, but they couldn't handle it.

Jones, meanwhile, snapped necks back that weren't prepared to be hit at all. In any case, Roy had very good power, but whether you jump to that elite level I think depends on whether you include speed as one component of power.

I get what you're saying. I was taking the overall impact on the fighter. McClellan had freakish power and on a scale of 1-10 would only be 10 because there is no 11.

Nope, he isn't a much better athlete either. If he was such a great athlete he wouldn't have felt the need to roid himself up.

The only fighters that gave Floyd much problems was Castillo, and to a certain extent, De La Hoya.

The reason I'd also tip Roy for defense is that he never absorbed the level of contact Mayweather has, which is why the whole chin issue with Jones remains unresolved. We know that Floyd has a solid beard, because he's been tagged enough for us to see it.

In fairness, Mayweather's biggest fights have come above his natural class, and by a wide margin, whereas Jones had his two prime ATGs at 160 and 168. Against Ruiz, he did not whitewash his largest opponent.

Mayweather dominated, embarrassed and stopped the favored Corrales at his prime weight, although he also did struggle mightily with Castillo and get hit more regularly by the likes of Chavez than Roy ever did. A far better fighter than Castillo, Hopkins, took just four rounds off Jones in a fight that Roy already had sewn up and cruised to the finish line.

I agree and that's likely the only fair way to assess power. Otherwise, you have to judge specific punches for their conventionality, so ultimately, the impact is the only reasonable way to gauge power, I think.

No he wouldnt, are we talking hand speed here. You can't rate Floyd as having quicker hand speed than RJJ, surely?

Speed as in footwork, I would still give the edge to Roy even when fighting at a heavier weight. Floyd is the technical defensive master, when against the ropes, no one has better defensive skills but for p4p boxing I would go for Roy Jones Jr.

If there was one boxer in history that I wish could never get old or past his prime it would be RJJ.

Are we talking Floyd at his best at 130? If so where the hell do all these speed scores of 8.5 and whatnot keep coming from?

At his best, Floyd rates in my book:

    Speed: 10
    Defense: 10
    Footwork: 9.5
    Reflexes: 9.5
    Power: 8

    Roy rates:

    Speed: 10
    Defense: 9.5
    Footwork: 10
    Reflexes: 10
    Power: 9

While Floyd rates a 10, Roy is a faster 10.

You comparing Kessler's opponents w/ Jones' opponents whether that was your intention. If you don't think they are equal, don't make the comparison.

Certainly dominating better comp counts right?

And I know what your point was w/ Kessler, but it doesn't work.
