Mayweather's Ability to Cut Off the Ring

I disagree completely. Although size is the biggest issue with a Mayweather vs Martinez fight Barkers shell defense and short jab and right hands cause Martinez serious problems.

 

Martinez had difficulty with ad******g his punches for someone the size of Barker, something he finally managed in the later rounds.

I don't disagree with you, everybody including Sergio under-rated Barker from a technical view point. I've been a fan for years, and can tell you the man is a solid technician.

Martinez struggles with size, atleast for a period, he always has and he always will.

I agree, unless they are stupid enough to come right at him. I believe he has improved as a puncher and it is suicidal to try and "Margarito" him.

Even Chavez was reluctant, initially, to rush in.

 

Barker and even Pavlik to a degree, employed technical pressure, coming forward and using their jab to disrupt Martinez's thought process and stop him from being able to pick his spots, atleast in the early going.

Margarito as we all know, walked forward and banked on being able to take the other guys shot, and then break him down over time.

 

I disagree. It was that shell and the jab-right hands. I didn't see size being the issue at all just Martinez really not being able to land anything flush and having to eat Barkers jab.

Barker fights out of that sheel defense and throws those short little one twos ala Winky Wright and it drove Martinez crazy. And the way Mayweather fought the later rounds vs Judah and a lot of the Mosley fight and the Cotto fight and others is that same kinda style. Macklin wasn't doing that and even if he was that's not his style at all and I think Martinez had trouble because he expected the face first hooker(punches) that fought Sturm.

I dont think floyd controlled the fight v ortiz like you guys are stating, I see it as Ortiz being his stupid self backed off, regardless of what floyd was doing, floyd was holding his ground ortiz should have gone after him and go toe to toe, but he decided to back off and try to 'box', he did similiar things vs Lopez

 

There were definitely spots Floyd came right at Ortiz, and Ortiz started circling all confused. Lopez was coming forward plenty against Ortiz, so it's probably the same reason he started backing off.

To this date, it's my favorite performance by Floyd.

 

Floyd is very good at it, what makes it a little different is we are usually seeing very aggressive fighters (pressure fighters, brawlers etc) attempting to cut off the ring and the boxers the ones who are trying to maneuver.

Floyd is the boxer but once he starts to break his opponents down in most cases he actually walks his opponent down and to do that effectively he HAS to cut off the ring.

It happens in most of his fights for periods the only fight where I don't remember him coming forward whatsoever (until the final round) was Hatton.

He did is beautifully vs Moseley, Ortiz and Judah. Against Cotto he didn't do it so much but I do think Cotto fought the fight of his life to be honest, any other version of Cotto fades down the stretch and we see the usual Floyd walking him down.
