Marquez makes sense as a tune-up. It's a big name, but beatable, with several disadvantages. As the article mentioned, he doesn't have the speed or aggression to make a rusted Mayweather uncomfortable. If the fight is made around 140, Marquez has a chance, about 25%. At 147, it's 0%. Mayweather is a small welterweight, and he moved up for bigger fights, and to chase Oscar. I don't think Mayweather can make 140 comfortably, but he can come pretty close, or do it if absolutely necessary, like Paul Williams making WW, or Adamek at LHW. I'd like to see it as a Marquez fan, he deserves the big payday. At this point in his career he is surely most concerned about his bank account and stability in retirement.
It's a "safe" fight for him. Who really wants to BUY (yes, it would be PPV) fight where the outcome is pretty clear?
Safe is the right word, it should be the easiest of the potential matchups, due only to the size difference. Still, Marquez is Mexico's legitimate representative, and Mayweather's comeback is a big story, it would sell about 750k, which is good considering its Marquez and the economy. Marquez has claimed to move up to 140lbs regardless, so the public could be swayed into thinking a catchweight at 143 is fair, when the more in tune boxing fans know it's not. A fight with the winner of Pac-Hatton would be bigger at around 1 mil or more especially if it's Hatton, Mosley about the same as Marquez, because he does not have the heritage backing Marquez does and isn't nearly as big in Vegas as in Cali.
Shane Mosley was here in OZ a week or so ago watching Billy Dib. I managed to bump into him near my work. i had the chance to ask him few questions. Apparently Shane Mosley is looking at the winner of Pac-Hatton, in November. If he cant get that fight he wants Cotto again. I asked him bout Mayweather and he said "mayweather doesnt want to fight me, we played ball together in vegas, he doesnt want to fight me" and that "Mayweather is going to fight Marquez".
Marquez ia a LW.... Floyd a WW. Floyd has had A LOT of time to allow his body to acclimate to being heavier. JMM has not. I honestly don't give a rats ass about PPV #'s or the economy. Why is the ECONOMY a factor when you'll have to shell out $50 to see a **** undercard and Floyd win? Floyd should fight a WW if he returns. Pac is the SMALLEST guy he should face (if he beats Hatton).
ROFLMAO The prima donna "retired" because he was scared shitless he'd have to fight Margarito. He'd NEVER get in the ring with him
thank you jeff and jjax. thats all i wanted to know. alot of people say there's no interest about floyds impending return here. i just went out for 30 minute to pick up a banh mi sammich and this thread is already 3 pages deep. yep, no interest at all...
I agree but we're not talking should here. He should fight Mosley, the fighter to beat in his current division. Pacquiao and Hatton are both still too small, Marquez is even worse. He'll probably be around for longer than one fight. The second would be the blockbuster, but he has to remain undefeated for it happen. Marquez is the most bankable and credit opponent the can be beaten easily. That's why it makes sense. I didn't say it was good, only that I'm happy Marquez gets a big payday to probably end his career. Mayweather should knock him out.
You can't think of any? :huh Or are you trying to bait me into mentioning Margarito? Dude, we know he'd NEVER face Margarito no matter how much money or belts were up for it. But as of now, Shane, Cotto, Williams or Pac would work for me. As much as I love JMM, he is just TOO small.
Nope. He's suspended for a year. Why would I mention him? In the meantime, go f*ck your bible. :thumbsup
Of course I'm not baiting you into mentioning Margarito, why the hell would I?, did you forget the recent disaster with Margarito or do we need another reminder?. There's no need to bait you into mentioning someone who isn't worth mentioning. Margarito was only really worth mentioning after he beat Cotto, even if he returns he has a long list of people that beat him that he should take care before anyone takes him seriously. So you mention Mosley as a real Welterweight, do you honestly believe that Mosley will go in as the favorite against Mayweather?, even if he doesn't you'll just say what you always do. "Mayweather fought another one he went in as the favorite against and won, big deal. Mosley is also shot, Mayweather should fight a real WW!!". Cotto is hardly worth mentioning as well and we all know Mayweather is going in as the favorite there too. Cotto still hasn't done anything good after the recent beat down against Hands of Plaster. Till we see a good win then we're going to talk. Pacquiao is far too small in your opinion, why is he mentioned now?
