I get every bit as annoyed by the chin obsession on this forum as anyone else, so apologies for adding to the cancer. Even so... I saw some claiming that the shots Mayweather took against Mosley to be proof to his having 'a very good chin'. However, I was rewatching the Cotto-Mosley fight recently and saw Mosley land shots just as cleanly on Cotto as he did on Mayweather (particularly one overhand right to the ear that greatly resembled the punch which wobbled Mayweather) with less reaction from Cotto than shown by Mayweather. Cotto is my favourite boxer yet I'll still admit that whilst superior to his chin at light-welter, the punch resistance he showed at welter was merely 'average' for an elite fighter. How is it then that Mayweather standing up to two big overhand rights (albeit from a banger like Mosley) instantly gave him the reputation as having a very good chin when those with less than excellent punch resistance have managed a similar feat? (Please no references wife beating/lawsuits/running from Pacquiao or any other unrelated bull**** ad hominem.)
I think Mayweather's chin is solid. I'm not going to call it granite but its solid. I think some people underestimated him because you rarely see him get hit hard with a flush shot, and therefore assumed that his great defense was all he had and that once he got hit hard by a bigger guy like Mosley that he would crumble.
People take shots differently from different boxers. Someone who doesn't hit hard can rock you, whereas you can take a number of clean shots from a big puncher without being rocked. It all depends on who throws the shots. Also, with Mayweather being very inactive over the last few years, he may have not been used to actually taking a shot. The more you are hit on the chin, the better you take a shot...not as in you should just stand there and be hit regularly whilst sparring for a bout. But being hit with a little regularity helps you prepare for a shot, in a way. Mayweather has an above average chin, but I wouldn't class it as great.
Well I would say from what we have seen he has a "solid chin".....you cant really tell if it is a super chin as it really hasnt been hit enough to be definative!

Floyd handled that first punch Mosley landed fine. The second one hurt him because he did not see it coming.
Well, yeah, Floyd usually takes the initial shot very well and almost never gets hit by follow through shots or gets worn down, people just don't land enough to get him through attrition. It's got to be a one punch thudder to even stun him, but I do think for as rarely as he gets hit clean, he CAN be stunned by like one good punch. By no means is his chin granite, but EVERYTHING else about him is A++ except his punching power, which is just solid, so he recuperates quickly, he has great heart, he has good awareness about what to do, and he is freaking impossible to hit twice in a row even if he is stunned badly because he just KNOWS what to do. Floyd does everything right. His chin is average at best, and it almost never gets tested. Pernell got hit a bit late in his carreer and really never had this OH WOW BANDY LEGGED feeling I get watching floyd, and moreso late Jones, after they absorb a really big shot. Better than Roys. If Mosley could have tee'd off on Floyd for 8 rounds like he did against Margarito cleanly, Floyd would probably be dead.
