Mayweather's legacy

Discussion in 'World Boxing Forum' started by KiwiMan, Aug 27, 2017.

Did Mayweather's legacy improve or worsen last night?

  1. Improved considerably. He beat a bigger, younger, fighter and breaks Marciano's record. 50-0!

    3.1%
  2. Improved a little, as per the above.

    15.0%
  3. No change - this was basically an exhibition fight.

    58.3%
  4. Worsened a little - see below

    9.4%
  5. Worsened considerably. An 0-0 novice got to the tenth round & won several rounds vs "The Best Ever".

    14.2%

Floyd will be remembered as money too. It's just who he is,and it's part of his legacy.

boxing is prizefighting after all. Floyd will be remembered as TBE prizefighter for the end of the humanity probably.

Decayed a bit, imo. Any boxer in the sport would have jumped at the chance to be the guy that Floyd used to break Marciano's record. Floyd could have selected an opponent worthy, but not too awfully risky at all from within the ranks of professional boxers and thereby paid respect due his forebears and his profession. He chose the money. That choice will follow him around.

Everybody would have choose money. There is short window to make money in sports.

Boxing is prizefighting. Floyd is TBE in that.

There is a reason too why Floyd could only fight against Conor.

We are just too hard for the man sometimes. Let him enjoy his moment.

In other news, the Pope is Catholic

Wee all agree, but the question is about whether last night's fight added to, didn't affect, or detracted from Floyd's legacy

Honestly did not improve it at all. I actually dont think hes done much to improve his legacy over the latter years. Hes a great fighter floyd but hes also boxings biggest conman.

Talking about a guy that got a split against an ageing de la hoya as the greatest ever. Or castillo. Or struggles against maidana. The guys carefully selected opponents for years. No ones saying hes not good or even great. But his big chance to cement his legacy came when pacman knocked hatton out. Instead of taking on the challenge he avoided it to take on more ageing fighters. Or guys disadvantaged with the weight. Or younger guys that we,re either crude like maidana or a bit too inexperienced like ortiz/canelo. His skillsets very good...but a very good younger fighter would have been the finish of his so called unbeatable style. Castillo paved the way...castillo was a great fighter himself. You needed to be. Maidana almost done it...with his crude style. He was great floyd but not nearly as great as hes led fans on to believe.

We all knew Berto wasn't the end

This most likely will be the last time he fights. And I hope he doesn't try to come back in 2-3 years due to money issues.

Farewell Floyd. Gonna miss the man as this time it's for real.

Floyd could really have been one if TBE he had all the incredible skills needed but he lacked the fighting heart & courage of a real champion Instead he allowed
the NSAC, & Vegas boxing to turn him into sideshow.an eventer. He wasnt allowed to lose any decision regardless. Its a shame really he'll regret it later when someone on skid row asks him " Did you used to be a fighter" ???

Hopefully he is remembered for his great fights, and not the "dodges" and orchestrated sham fights.

I actually liked Floyd a bit more after this. He put on a show, he showed he has the skill, the confidence in his skill and reads his opponent enough to literally do almost anything he wanted with the fight to make it interesting and end it how he wanted. A guy bigger than him, who he humoured whenever the bigger younger guy threw his toys about anything.

McGregor nuthuggers are still finding ways to cry but at the end of the day McGregor had everything his way in terms of fight agreement and Mayweather threw away his cautious clinical style and just came straight at him and gave him 3 easy rounds of sparring, then took him to school. It was quite entertaining to watch and the sad thing is that it should show exactly how huge the gully in boxing ability was, but people actually took it that McGregor gave Floyd a hard time.
