Awesome punch i trust he will be throwing it with more regularity now after seeing the effect it had on ricky hatton, He will be baiting come forward pressure fighters with that hook, its a thing of beauty.
It was a beautiful shot, and the effect it had on Hatton will be replayed on countless re-runs of his career to highlight his greatness. He is a true ATG.
It wasn't a huge part of his game until he realized Hatton was planting his left foot when he felt he had floyd cornered and lunging in with a hook while allowing his right hand to drift towards his chest. Mayweather noticed this in the first round and was timing that KO punch the entire fight. Say what you want about Floyd, his best skill is his ability to study a fighter and make adjustments. He's absolutely incredible at this.
STOP THIS MTV CHECK HOOK SH!#!!!!!!!!!!!.....YOU GUYS ACT LIKE SOMEBODY WHO SEES A RAPPER GO PLATINUM AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HE'S YOUR FAVORITE RAPPER MTV PUNKS-people who jump on whatever's hot at the moment i.e. posers check hook Emmanuel Steward called it that during the whole fight because it is known in boxing class. EDUCATE YOURSELF
I was going to say. As much as I like Mayweather, that is a punch of opportunity. Not many fighters would throw leaping left hooks with such terrible inaccuracy and lumbering speed that they would caught with that. For the most part, people who face Mayweather are smart enough to know that he's much, much faster and far more skilled than they, so they choose their shots a little more wisely. I think the punch landed in part thanks to Mayweathers lying back in rounds 5 and 6. I think these were intentionally "throw away" rounds, to give Hatton a sense he was doing better than he really was. Hatton in turn got more aggressive and dropped his guard, and Mayweather was able to capitalize. He's not only physically the best fighter in the world, but mentally as well.
STFU He's been using that MANUEVER for years. Every good boxer uses that. Ya'll don't know what the **** it is.
it was the right punch for the right opponent, like you say a punch of opportunity, not some Fight Night Round 3 boxer special move. that's an interesting take on rounds 5 and 6. do you think Mayweather was confident enough after the first 4 rounds to do that midway into the fight? if so then that's an incredible display of both self belief and ring smarts.
Most counterpunchers throw that shot, and others like it. Jones Jr also threw alot of punches like that. They're just short timing shots that work really well on fighters always coming forward.
it was the right punch for the right opponent, like you say a punch of opportunity, not some Fight Night Round 3 boxer special move. THANK-YOU!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL Check Hook: the latest catch phrase sweeping the nation that makes people think you know boxing. Umm thanks Manny...
I think so. It just seemed like he flipped the "off" switch and went to super defense mode for no reason at all. Just kind of covered up, almost rope-a-dope style. He was clearly leading up to that point, Hatton hadn't hit him with much of anything. It certainly got Hatton to be at least think he could hit him. I also think Floyd may have done the same in the first couple rounds against Judah. Just kind of held on and felt him out. It seemed as soon as he actually wanted to fight, he took complete control. capfunds, lots of fighters use that punch, it's a pretty easy way to score a knock-down, if you can land it properly. The thing is, it has to be set up, you're reliant on your opponent to lunge forward like that, and there are not many people confident enough to make such a risky move against such a tough adversary.
The check hook isn't something new. If they would have called it a counter left hook - this thread wouldn't have even been made.
