Interesting to note was that Emanuel Steward called it a "check hook" in his commentary during the live knockdown (and so way before Mayweather called it a check hook in the post-fight interview).
haha.... I never would of imagined check hook would get this big. Especially since I was watching the fight on cctv 5 in chinese
Check-hook isn't "just a hook", it's a combination of hook, uppercut, accurate timing, nifty footwork, luck, and the right opponent to be able to pull it off. Also, it is not exclusive to boxing.
If Floyd invented it, then how did Manny Steward know what to call it right after Floyd did it? Gotcha!
Floyd did not invent it! The check-hook has been used for about a million years! Sugar Ray Robinson used it to devastating effect, for starters. All kinds of fighters throughout the years have used it. By the way, for anyone to call it his "signature punch" would be an insult to the true greats. Learn your history.
Some explanations of the check-hook here: http://ph.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071209202833AAHabBz
Exactly. It's nothing new! It's a punch learned by amateurs, but even many of the pro's would be lucky to land one. Roy Jones was able to pull it off effectively, plus many of the old fighters. I believe Foreman called it a "hookercut".
uh, mayweather has been throwing that left hook his whole ****ing career. that is his money punch all day - especially when he leads with it. One thing that made his fight against oscar tougher than what it had to be was the fact oscar was blocking this shot. I was actually amazed oscar could block that shot, and it even seemed to throw floyd off when he was blocking it. One thing about floyd is that every fight he will start by trying to land that lead left hook. If he starts to land, its not going to be 'pretty' for the other guy at all.
The left hook that Oscar repeatedly blocked in that fight was a LEAD left hook. The only time Floyd really got his left hook in was as a counter (the only one I remember was in combination with right hands kind of on the inside).
The "check hook" has been around for years. Floyd didn't invent the punch. It's a great shot, if executed properly, against fighters coming in. If you don't see it coming, it has a big effect.
