your absolutely correct its a counter lefthook there is no such thing this shits just been made up checkhook what bull****
Actually you guys are very wrong. I first heard of this back in the late 1980's while sparring with Roy Jones. All Roy Jones Sr. trained fighters are very prolific at the punch, especially RJ of course. Add Lamar Parks to the mix- he worked with Big Roy as an amateur and he had a VERY heavy and fast check hook.
Yeah Emmanual Steward did call it a check hook during the replay of the shot before they ever interviewed Floyd. So PBF didnt just make up the term. It is my first time ever hearing it however. I dont see what is different about it, to me it just looked like a counter left hook that landed great because Hatton was wide open. The only thing unusual was the angle between them.
A check hook, the way RJ threw it and praxctied it etc..is a short, quick left hook thrown while leaning slightly on your back foot, almost awlways it is thrown over a missed right hand from your opponent. Lamar Parks actually had amuch heavier one then RJ did, although RJ's was quicker and snappier. Both RJ and Lamar (Smoke Gainer, too) would sit on that back and foot and just WAIT until you threw a right hand that they could counter. I mean WATCH some of RJ's best offensive performances and I guarantee you that you will see that scenario played out over and over.
Yes. I read about it years ago in boxing technique books back in the 80's. I also explained on page 3 (I think). It might have been page 2. It might have been a completely different thread. **** knows!
yep. it's a left hook counter on the back foot. mayweather probably calls it differently since his punch doesn't have full commitment (a "check") so as not to expose himself to a possible counter. so, it's a cautious almost tentative punch thrown still within his defensive shell. but most of his punches are like that anyway, checks while back-pedalling. the difference is that this punch was very well-timed with an off-balanced hatton lunging in and hitting the turnbuckle resulting in a dramatic KD. i'm sure if hatton wasn't spectacularly KD'd by that so-called "check hook", it will still be called what it really is just a normal left hook counter on the back foot.
Theres a lot of different types of counter shots like the check hook. Theres also a counterpunch called the rock and roll. As your opponent comes forward throwing a straight shot you rock to one side, and roll back to the other throwing a counter straight right hand. It allows you to move to the side avoiding your opponents shot, and roll back with the straight right to the other side where he is moving forward.
