Just wondering about the variation to the left hook after watching Mayweather vs Mosley match. I really don't understand how Mayweather throws his left hook, its like a long range slapping hook that he uses as in comparison to a conventional left hook such as Cotto's one where the fighter twist the body and is conventionally a close ranged punch.

I tried a long range hook on a bag, and I truly don't understand how he can generate power at that range without leaning his body into it:?, conventionally its a punch that most trainers tell you to lean into and twist the body. If anyone can explain, please do!

It's not a powerful left hook but a quick one that is just meant to surprise opponents. It still has enough pop to drop someone like Marquez though. To answer your question though, there are different ways to throw a left hook (each with a different purpose), and your coach probably wants you to master the standard powerful left hook first.

Bingo. It's on the jawline / chin every time, and if it catches you unaware or off balance there's a good chance you are down.

I know what you're talking about, he turns his wrist at the last second before impact making it a punch. He really extends the arm out far and reaches, then comes in like a slap but at the last second turns the wrist over.

Finally!!! Right on! That's what I was getting on about, if you were to try his left hook a few times on a heavy bag your left arm will start hurting due to the contact point being the point were all you muscles are out stretched in comparison to a normal left hook were your arm is close and well supported.

A perfect slow motion of this is in the second round of Mayweather Vs Mosley, where Mayweather gets tagged by Mosley's right hook. He uses the same shot in most of his fights, but this is its the best slow mo example of this shot I can recall.
