Should have got the benefit of the doubt. It was early in the fight and he'd taken no punishment up to that point. Lewis was wobbly but did beat the count, had enough presence of mind to put his gloves up and then immediately protest. The next ten seconds would have shown if he was completely gone or able to survive.

Plenty of heavyweight fights in that era were allowed to continue with the fighters in similar or worse condition. Think Bowe careening around the ring against Golota, or Holy struggling to even walk forward against Bowe.

Morrison when wobbled most of the times got finished off easily by fighters who weren't shot

Good stoppage. Lewis' head was in another galaxy, legs were completely gone. McCall may have caused permanent damage if they let it continue.

I wonder how many people who claim it was a " good " stoppage would agree that Steele's stoppage of Taylor was a good one too? Cos for sure Taylor didn't know who or where the fvck he was. No matter how many seconds were left on the clock.

Or could it perhaps be that McCall and Taylor are American, and Lewis and Chavez are not?

Thank you. Somebody else finally questions this stoppage, which I feel, was poor.

Lets be perfectly clear here. I feel it was poor because the champ (read titlist) wasn't provided the opportunity to work his way out of extreme duress, something that we croon over on these boards with other HOF past greats who were afforded the moment to climb off of the deck to pull the iron out of the fire, as it were.

    This stoppage sucked!

As the champ, Lewis should have been given the opportunity to continue while the ref should have prepared himself to jump in if Lewis was hurt again in the following couple of minutes afterwards.

I reckon it was a fair stoppage. Lennox was all over the place.

Lewis was out on his feet, and not recovered from the punch. He fell into the ref's chest as it was waived off. A great stoppage. If allowed to continue, McCall KO's him, perhaps baldy and who knows if Lewis physiologically recovers.

Or maybe Lewis rides it out like he did when Briggs had him wobbly? McCall was hardly the best of finishers...

Lewis stumbled to the left, than stumbled to the right and then leaned onto the ref from stumbling forward. The ref looked into his eyes which we can't see and waived it off. I see nothing wrong with the stoppage. Yes some fighters have been given a chance to continue under such circumstances but that doesn't make this a bad stoppage. McCall was fired up had that continued Lewis would have been seriously hurt.
