I know this thread has been done before, but I just took a look at when they sparred and thought it might give a little more insight as to how this bout might have played out, who would have won? I felt McCallum beat Hearns when they sparred.

I always thought at 154. Hearns outboxes Mike.. At 160, Hearns was after Hagler and he got a little sloppier. with the jab I think Hearns beats Mike by decision, but he would not knock him out.

I don't take to much away from sparring. I once saw a journeyman fighter absolutely blow out a former world champion in St louis gym once. Who knows where either of those guys were in there conditioning.

In regards to what would have happened if the Hitman and Body Snacther had ever fought, I don't know but I would have bought a ticket. They are the two best 154 pounders in my lifetime. One thing is for sure, Manny Steward wanted no part of putting Hearns in the ring with McCallum.

    McCallum by late rounds tko.

He works the body in the early rounds. He turns up the heat late. He absorbs a few bombs along the way but his strong chin and ability to ride with punches ensures he'd still there to finish the job.

    Hearns at either weight IMO.

McCallum was an EXCELLENT fighter, don't get me wrong... but not quite as good as his legend has become.

Whereas I think often times Tommy gets underrated.

This isn't Milton McCrory that Mike is in with. Hearns' jab and speed from long range would pose big issues for the methodical, somewhat slow McCallum. And although McCallum had an excellent chin... he wasn't Hagler, he could be hurt. And Tommy even hurt Hagler!

I actually see Hearns dropping McCallum, and outboxing him to win a clear UD.

I would favor Mike at both of these weights and likely above as well. But they would be very close to a pick em type of a fight

I like McCallum stoppage while behind on points in a very close, very competitive, awesome fkn fight.

Hearns an ATG talent and he could conceivably box his way to a decision win here but I think McCallum's relentless pressure, body shots and iron chin would wear Tommy down for a stoppage at some point.

I see this result also, Hearns had the jab to control Mccallum from a distance, plus the respect Hearn's right hand had earned over the yrs, Mccallum would be very cautious , losing rds waiting on the perfect counter . Ultimately he would lose the fight because of the over cautiousness by dec.

Very hard to say. Let's say Hearns over 12 and Mike over 15. Think it would have been a great fight either way.

    Agreed.

I think a lot of people have the wrong idea of who Mike McCallum was as a fighter.

He didnt have the same will to win that Hagler and Leonard had... Marvin and Leonard were willing to walk through the fires of Hell to get inside on Hearns... I dont think that same mentality was in Mike.

I think after getting hurt by Hearns, that McCallum would become tamed.

This I don't agree with. He took some bad shots from Jackson without getting gun shy. Instead it made him decide to get JJ out of there, which he did. He took hard shots by Curry and Toney as well without stepping back. He never looked like he would back out of a fight.
