I actually met Julian Jackson at the World Hall of Fame dinner in Los Angeles 7 or 8 years back. No one was talking to him, and I see him and I said Julian- it is a pleasure to meet you. You are the most devastating puncher I have ever seen!! He was very grateful. After I said hello all these other people say who is that? I was surprised since most people should know Julian, but that crowd is sometimes California fight scene people or oldtimers. Well about 10 minutes later I am standing in the crowd away from Julian, and his wife I think walks up to me and gives me a card with Julian's picture and autograph which says Julian "the Hawk" Jackson. He actually signed it for me and had her give it to me. So I walked back and told him thank you. He was a great guy. And it is always amazing to meet fighters up close. You know he is one of the best punchers to ever lace up his gloves, and when you look at him you think "he doesn't look that big or stand out like he would punch hard" So just looking at anyone you cannot tell what kind of punch they have.
Honestly,I fail to see what was impressive about McCallum's performance against Curry. It's one of his better wins, but performances? He set that hook up perfectly, but it seemed like he was getting outboxed quite decisively in the previous rounds. Not just losing the rounds, but doing so quite convincingly. I think one of his best performances was against Luigi Minchillo in Italy.Minchillo was a pretty limited fighter, but he was tough, durable and always game - and McCallum completely took him apart over a long period of time.Looked sharp as hell and demonstrated a great variety of punches in picking him apart. And considering it was pretty early in his career,I thought he looked pretty damn good in dismantling and breaking down Kalule, too.
Man, I am jealous. I met Tyson and Toney.. even Ali later on in his life but I would love to meet Jackson. I do believe he is under-rated relative to his weight and that the McClellan fights are the reason. He looked like a midget next to Gerald, a big ****ing middle while Julian was a natural 154 guy. Also, he was no spring chicken by the time he came into the limelight.
Wow, well I am jealous that you met Tyson and Toney, and Ali? Not bad. The place I met the fighters I have met is at the Hall of fame dinners. They have a meeting area before hand where the fighters come in and you can get autographs and take pictures. A lot of fun as you guys probably know. I actually spoke to Mike McCallum on the phone many years ago before one of his fights. He was very nice guy and very serious about boxing. He joked, but when it came time to talk about future opponents and things like that, he was all business. The only guys I felt were not that nice were Evander Holyfield and Barry McGuigan.
Watson for me. Pure, pure class performance. On any given day, McCallum beats any middleweight since the 80s other than RJJ, and he wasn't even a middleweight.
not so sure i agree with you on this one , watson had beaten benn yes a very good win. but the rest of his career up to the mccallum fight was not full of depth he had lost to james cook after which he was matched carefully by duff . fighters on the world stage at a good stage of their career's apart from benn who was far from the finished article when watson beat him . watson came up short and failed to win against eubank twice (though the first was very close ) mccallum cook i was at the mccallum vs watson fight and it was a privilage to watch mccallum put up a display that made it feel like a man was giving a boy a lesson
I met the man in your Avatar back in '95 after the Ruddock-Morrison fight in KC.. We were actually leaving the fight and my buddy spotted him across the street and we rushed over to him, immediately like 3 or 4 guys moved towards us like they thought we were up to something, we stopped and said we just wanted to see Mr. Hearns.. Tommy sort of shook his head and they backed up we got close to him he held his hand out assuming that we wanted an autograph so my buddy handed him his fight program he had bought that night, someone handed him a pen or something and he started trying to write, it wouldn't work, not sure if the pen was bad or if the wax like finish on the program made it impossible to sign, either way it didn't happen, he held his hand out again to see if we had something else maybe for him to sign (we didn't) we were just like froze overcome by the moment we said nothing just kind of smiled and like laughed he looked up and kind of smiled also still he had not uttered a word but he was very inviting, I finally came back to earth and spoke I said so are you planning on fighting Duran (Duran was on the card as well) I was assuming that was why he was there he smiled and said I think that might be in my plans, he gave me a little tap on the shoulder turned and walked off.. Though we didn't have much to say to him, got no autograph, had no damn camera it is still vivid in my mind, he seemed like a really cool guy, he is one of my all time favs so it was super cool to just be standing next to him.. Ironically earlier in the night Alonzo Highsmith (NFL) who was also on the card was like 5 feet from us outside the Arena like warming up but we didn't realize it was him we didn't know he was even going to be on the fight card lol..
Me too. Curry was being pressed back and was lacking the focus he showed earlier plus had his hand down going back into straight lines. It was only a matter of time before Mccallum was going to get him and he did. As far as power, Mccallum had good power hence the nickname "Bodysnatcher" but was an accumulative puncher. At his best he was going to test his opponents' will.
