It was both. McCallum did set up with a feint uppercut to the body but an elite fighter like Curry had no business getting hit by a swing like that.

I know someone who's worked with McCallum and McCallum's told him in private that he took a wild, hopeful swing.

Either your man doesn't like McCallum or that is a lie. Either way there was nothing hopeful about that swing friend.

To compact and well thrown. Nothing wild about it-Really, really solid left hook.

Indeed. the Lone Star Cobra had his hands down because he thought McCallum was going to the body. Brilliant counter shot by McCallum. :bbb

I didn't see domination. He started to land his combinations, but Mike was still there and looked very anxious to mix it up. He was very intense.

When I saw this thread pop up, I thought 'That'll die within the first few comments.' but I see it again here and it's four pages. :patsch

Yeah, I think rd 4 and rd 5 before the KO was quite even after Curry having a good rd 3. Curry landed a big right early in rd 4, but after that McCallum came on a bit. Crucially, he was very consistent (even more than usual) in digging left and rights to the body. Curry blocked most of them, but always when blocking body shots there's the possibility of leaving your chin exposed. And that's what happened. I'm not saying it was inevitable, but Curry leaving that opening was partly down to McCallum going consistently to the body before that IMO.

I think part of the reason for the KO was that Curry thought he had gotten McCallum with that left hook he threw when in fact McCallum rolled with the punch and used the momentum to throw a left hook of his own.

I just rewatched those rounds and this was my take on them. Curry likely won round 4, but he wasn't dominating. If anything, McCallum had a better round than the previous one. His rhytm seemed to improve a bit.

As usual with these things the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. McCallum may have thought beforehand he may look to use a left hook in that way, but no way on this earth was the plan to lose the first four (on my card Anyway) and then launch a one punch KO. No way. Likewise. Neither was it complete good fortune. An opportunity arose to land a good left hook, and by **** did he nai
    l it.

    Perhaps not.

But what McCallum did do was illustrate that he had done his homework on the guy.

Pre-fight preparations. This bout reeks of it and one guy really did his homework and had the tools and smarts to do something about it. Curry did pose in there from time to time and the punch to throw was a wide looping shot, not a straight punch. Honeyghan had said that about the Curry defense and I'm sure a smart guy like McCallum and his cornermen did not miss those comments. It was something to look for and Mike McCallum knew exactly what to do at the exact millisecond.
