Luther McCarty beat Al Palzer for the White Heavyweight championship in18rds on the 1st January 1913 and declared he would not fight a black man. Jack Johnson The Reign ,Adam Pollack page 688. McCarty changes his mind later and says he will fight only one black man the worlds champion Jack Johnson for which fight he requires $30,000,page 602 same book. The Freeman a black newspaper observed that when Johnson asked for$30,00 to defend against Langford he was called a hog, but nobody said anything detrimental about McCarty,barely out of the prelim class wanting the same amount to face Johnson.
