The HBO broadcast of McCline vs. Whitaker was a hoot. McCline landed a big shot, and on cue, Jim Lampley shouts, " And that punch knocked Goofy silly! "

Goofy being Whitaker's nickname. McCline was a solid top ten guy. Good enough to beat most of the top ten today.

I may be wrong, but I believe McCline is the only guy who unsuccessfully challenged for the heavyweight title four times, against four different men, each time for a different belt.

He fought Wlad for the WBO belt. Byrd for the IBF belt. Valuev for the WBA belt. And Peter for the WBC belt (interim).

I'm pressed for time here, but Golota was catching a beat down in the last round of that fight.
Whitaker was inferior to Savarese, having lost to him immediately before Savarese fought Grant.
Boswell was undefeated off Butterbean level opponents.

I'm not gonna defend Briggs anymore. The guy had limited career with one or two bright spots.

On one hand I take issue with people saying McCline lacked heart, just because as a fan of the sport I'm appreciative of any fighter I've watched over the years and accusations of cowardice are such an affront. But at the same time, in his own way McCline admitted as much himself.

I remember after on of his well-contested losses (Brock maybe, or Sam Peter) he more or less said 'yeah I'm disappointed, but I'm just a guy from Harlem who started the game late. This sport made me richer than I could have dreamed so I'm lucky.'

Although I have the greatest respect for the life and death warriors, I smile when I think of that interview. More often than not this sport leaves its gladiators battered and bitter so its nice when a guy can accept this fate with peace of mind. Good for him.

I don't want to go tit for tat with you but I find it odd that you can easily dismiss Whitaker as inferior to Savarese because he lost to him. (By split decision no less and besides the fact Whitkaer dropped Savarese in the 6th round and the fact Whitaker was in only his 19th pro fight and Savarese around 40) yet you want to claim Grant is better than Mccline when Mccline Ko'd Grant in the first round.
Boswell had talent but yes his resume was a little light.
Grant and Mccline's resume are similar I would favor McCline's resume but then add in when the two met Mccline sparked him in one round and the pendulum swings decidedly in McCline's favor.

Pretty sure Grant had confidence issues after the Lewis loss.
