Can Americans tell me why Gerald McCllenan and Jeff Lacy so overhyped on their failed visit to British shores.

Both big punchers yes - but so are alot of fighters.

McCllenan after a 1st round burst and no answer for Benns ducking and diving and had a non existent defence.

The red hot favorite McCllenan was a very flawed poor defensive fighter with amateur corner men.

He took so many powerful shots that sadly he was permantley brain damaged.

But lets not dwell on the tragic consequences.

Lets think about the hype before the fight - McClleanan said he was going to damage Benn that he would win in one round.

The Mini Mike Tyson as Don King put it.

Then Jeff Lacy was the same old story all over again.

A Yank Monster puncher coming over to bash up Calzaghe.

How did Lacy start favorite for that fight?:patsch

    A overhyped limited inexperienced champion,.

Fighting a champion with the intensity and experience of Calzaghe.

The difference in class was immediate from the first round and Calzaghe ****ing humilated him.

Why do you Yanks always hype a fighter up before they are truley tested???

Gerald McClellan at least had defeated Julian Jackson. Yes, Jackson was naturally smaller, had eye problems, and on the decline, but still, a top middleweight (a strong division at the time) and G-Man twice KO'd him.

Jeff Lacy was an entertaining, well-hyped fighter, but I personally never thought that much of him, despite liking him as a fighter.

McCellan is said to haev most likely had health problems going into the Nigel Benn fight, having persistent headaches since the first Julian Jackson bout.

Yeah I always thought that it wasn't just Nigel Benn that gave the G-man his brain damage, he just tipped him over the edge.

Oh and this is a stupid thread, sorry. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but not when applied to anoraks on ESB.

difference between G_MAN and lacy G-man had out of this world power. and had knocked out manny a murderous highly ranked fighters at the time .

lacy at the time had also won all of his fight and beat som big names at 168 that is. plus he destroyed RIED who gave JOE a good fight. there is your answer. it's about what have you done lately and at that time he destroyed ried while JOE had beaten ashire and damaged his hand

yes I seen both the Julian Jackson fights

but one of them was over so quickly that Gerald had a very easy untesting night

Benn had a bigger heart than he bargained for

and having survived the 1st round took McCllenan into a war he would not recover from

g-man made a david haye-esque mistake in throwing everything into the 1st/2nd rounds and having hardly anything left for the rest of the match, which cost him dearly.

The fight should have been stopped after McCllenan knocked Benn though the ropes and he was allowed to get back into the ring.

McCllenan was far from embarrassing himself , he made one hellava fight that cost him his health .

    Hindsight is a wonderful thing

    History repeated itself here

    First McCllenan

then Lacy coming over was the same old story

I'm not trying to be wise after the event

I'm probing the Americans why they sent these two fighters over to Britain so overhyped

In the case of McCllenan extreme arrogance and pride

he didnt know who he was ****ing with - Benn is a animal I have always known this he has a very big heart

Eubank would have been way too smart for McCllenan as well

I consider McCllenan to have been cheated out of victory.

he wasn't KO'd so no it shouldnt have been. the ref did seem to be protecting Nigel at times early on, but Gman still couldnt put Nigel when he was in his face so too bad.
