McCllenan and Lacy............Overhyped Amercians Coming To British Shores

McClellan was a superb offensive fighter. Defensively very flawed granted, but a fighter with great potential.

Lacy was a banger, little else, there is no comparison.

Man, you act as if the American public held a gun to Lacy's head and made him fly across the pond. Lacy wanted the fight, Calzaghe wanted the fight, their teams made it happen. Plain and simple. Sure, some fans may have known that Lacy was overhyped before the Calzaghe fight, but its not their fault that the fight was made.

 

Whats your point? 2 fights, big ****ing deal. You mean kinda like Ricky Hatton comming over here and getting his ass handed to him by FMJ? Does that make Ricky Hatton and overhyped piece of ****? NO. Why do all you Brits get such a hard on when one of your fighters beats an American, yet we could give a ****? Maybe its because you are so used to your fighters getting their ass kicked?

 

I find that G-Man vs Benn is an emotive topic. The tragedy inspires a lot of anger in some Americans, who have taken revisionist history to new proportions and we now have some people who feel qualified to pass judgement on British boxing sportsmanship as a whole because of this fight and Hatton's mauling against Kostya, which is a bit like me saying American judging is fundamentally corrupt because of Lewis/Holyfield and ODLH/Sturm, ie, ****ing ridiculous.

Benn wasn't helped back into the ring after being knocked out. He DID re-enter the ring within the permitted time frame.

The (French) ref held G-Man off for a few seconds too long when Benn was back in the ring. Seen it before many times.

Benn DID rabbit punch. He was told off by the Ref for it a few times, but the ref was poor and didn't get a hold on it.

That's happened a million times in a million fights and wouldn't have been remarked on except in passing if the sad events hadn't unfolded.

It's a bit tasteless to bring the G-Man/Benn fight up as some kind of UK vs USA victory. It was a great fight but nothing to gloat about.

 

It works in the opposite way my friend, MUCH MORE OFTEN.

Benn won that fight fair and square. A quality win for him and deserves all the credit in the world. Before you say hype job, remember it was McClellan who almost had Benn down and out. I wouldn't call that a domination by any means.

Now Lacy is another story. Yes, he was hyped by the TV networks here, and was KOing everyone in sight. But as far as recognition of skills, he had yet to crack ANY P4P Top 10 lists, the Ring included.

So Calzaghe whupped him 12-0, but guess what? Based on paper alone, he defeated a solid contender who wasn't even P4P. And yet that win at the time catapulted him into the upper echelon of the sport??? This win is on par with Hagler beating John The Beast Mugabi. Good win over a solid contender, but when we talk about Hagler, do we talk about the Mugabi fight? HELL NO! We first talk his wins over Hearns, Duran, hell even Antuofermo. But with Joe, Lacy always came first, or now second after Hopkins. For someone that great...that's it? Talk about OVERHYPED.

And don't get me started on Hopkins. The blind fans can yak all they like about he shut Hopkins up for saying he'd never lose to a white boy (which was disgraceful by B-Hop and made me lose a lot of respect for him). But theatrics aside, what was Calzaghe beating? A aging legend well into his forties with two losses (debated or not) in his last four fights.

Now he's going after a Roy Jones that has been on the deck for SEVERAL MINUTES after consecutive losses that happened almost 3-4 years ago!!! Anyone on this board that thinks Calzaghe would beat a pre-heavyweight Roy Jones, Jr. should not be allowed to comment without getting laughed at everytime they opened their mouths!

If you want to talk about overhyped, what exactly has Hatton done since he came here? Beat Collazo on a disputed decision, KOd Castillo on a body shot, and then won 3 rounds against Mayweather before getting knocked out. Now to me, I personally wouldn't call that overhyped at all. But by the standard on which you judge American fighters, I wouldn't be surprised to see posters on this board throw it right back at you.

 

You're onto a loser with this topic. Firstly, McClellan and Lacy had the balls to come over here and fight, which in itself is worthy of respect. More importantly, the amount of British fighters that go to the States and get their arse handed to them far exceeds the other way around. Just can't see your point here, other than that I'd agree that Lacy was overhyped. Not his fault, though.
