Maidana was marching Khan down all night and Khan has far superior speed, skills, defence, attack, accuracy and footwork compared to McCloskey yet some how McCloskey beats Maidana?!?!

Prescott is awful, horrendous, absolutely terrible. One of the worst boxers I've seen p4p, although he's nowhere near as bad as Valuev. Against Mitchell he had no plan B, he was slow, sloppy, and was telegraphing his punches like a drunkard in a bar brawl. I thought I was watching in slow motion.

Khan's improved a lot since then. Of course Prescot would have some chance but it would only be a punchers chance and a far lower chance than the others would have. Besides, Khan seemed to take Maidanas punches okay, so maybe Prescott would need to do a bit more than just land one hayemaker. Khan is no lighweight anymore.

As for the fight selling, of course it would sell, but so did Haye/Harrison, yet you were crying about that fight. It would be nice to avenge a loss but only if Khan took this as one of his keep busy fights. He doesn't need it. Let's see Prescott get his revenge against Mitchell, then we can see wussup.

You can say what you want about him..... was a bit protected, he's a bit thick and uses Twatter too much.... but boy has he sorted his career out. Wins over Barrera, Kotelnik and Maidana more than make up for that shocker against Prescott.

Unless a rematch is immediate or actually earned, it's got no meaning. If Arum was to shepherd Pacquiao into returns with Cotto, Margarito or heaven forbid Clottey..... are those meaningful fights?

It's just three opponents that Pacquiao has banged up pretty recently and are being made because Floyd Mayweather prefers to cherrypick women and security guards these days.

The Benn/Eubank rematch was relevant because Benn had gone to the States and rebuilt his career and annexed the WBC title. Eubank had carried on winning against middling opponents and there was a large public demand of the fight, and it received plenty of coverage alongside Bruno vs Lewis.

A Khan vs Prescott return varies twofold. Khan has done the Benn bit, but Prescott has lost twice to average fighters, including Kevin Mitchell on the Khan undercard, where he was shut out by being outboxed by a slugger - doesn't look good at all. Any chance of a credible rematch died right there. End of story.

The 135-147 division is stacked with young contenders on their way up and established champions of quality - he could fight any of those and receive widespread credit for doing so.

Or he could dig up the past and exorcise a ghost that caught him on the worst night of his career, when his tactics were wrong, his head was wrong and everything else. Sometimes you just lose and there's no explanation - look at PL teams losing to pub teams in the FA Cup..... look at a 100/1 horse winning the Grand National.

No need for a re-run, just move on.

 

I can't believe one side or the other but looking at this thread and then the Prescott/Khan thread, It's a sad state of affairs. A very fortunate eurochamp gets a world title shot in a winnable fight and he wants more money, a champ saying he'd like to avenge his loss but doesn't want to. Seriously, thank **** for fighters like Cotto who actually have some balls. I can't fathom McCloskey's logic and therefore cannot believe he's throwing this opportunity away for money he'd never get the chance to make anyway if he didn't take this fight. I am absolutely sick to ****ing death of hearing the money excuse, especially in world title fights. Take the ****ing fight, the reward is great enough.

good post but I think I'll delay judgement on McCloskey until I hear what exactly he was offered. McCloskey is well known in Britain and on Sky and will sell a massive proportion of the tickets if this is staged in the MEN.

McCloskey has far more chance than Prescott. Only a dullard would think otherwise. McCloskey may not be a power puncher but he's not featherfisted either, and he has quick hands and hits from awkward angles. He's unlikely to win or knock out Khan but so is Prescott.
