    McCullough wants world title bout

Wayne McCullough has lost his last seven world title fights

Belfast boxer Wayne McCullough is refusing to give up hope of landing another crack at a world title.
McCullough has lost his last seven world title fights but told BBC Sport that he has heard encouraging noises from the World Boxing Council (WBC).
"The WBC said that the bantamweight champion from Japan (Hozumi Hasegawa), if he agrees to fight me, that they would let me," said McCullough.
"I know the opportunity is there because I was a world champion."
In his last bout in June, the 38-year-old Belfast fighter quit on his stool while ahead against Juan Ruiz in the Cayman Islands.
Reports stated that the former WBC bantamweight champion had announced his retirement immediately after the defeat but this was then denied by the Northern Irishman.
"I was injured going into the fight," McCullough insisted in the BBC Newsline interview.
"I keep myself in shape. I train every day. I'm 38-year-old but Bernard Hopkins is 43-year-old.
"If you keep yourself in shape, you can fight on a regular basis. "I know I can become a world champion again. I've lost in my last seven world championship fights but I thought I was robbed a few times."

Jesus Christ. Maybe he and Holyfield could have a deluded-off or something.

He should fight Dunne. The fight would be great either in Ireland or the states and the winner would have a claim at an eliminator.

Waynes never lacked in the heart department. He was finished at the top level after Scott Harrison beat him handily.

I'd like him to fight Dunne... Can't see it happening, if that fight doesn't happen Wayne needs to pass on his experiance to some of the young guns... I'd hate to see him badly beaten. He was an absolutely incredible fighter in his prime.

There was talk of it happening last year when Dunne had the euro belt, but i doubt it will come about.imagine the crowd they'd get our 2 most popular boxers of the last 10 years.

    (1) That should tell you something:nod

    (2) Of course they will; you're a popular fighter, who used to have a crowd-pleasing blood and guts style, and also used to own a belt. They don't give a **** if you're a washed-up shot fighter; they'll still throw you in with the No.1 guy in the division. I'm sure Hasegawa won't mind either; he'll get more money for butchering you than he would for beating anyone else in that division.

    (3) WAS is the key word - and with the proliferation of belts these days you are one among many; don't count it as a special privilege; it doesn't mean you're a great fighter.

    (4) Who? Where?

    (5) Bernard Hopkins does not have a face-first defence though; it's actually a terrible comparison to make.

    (6) Yes you have lost them all; again, that should tell you something. As for these robberies you mention, the only close one I can remember was the first fight with Larios, and we all know what happened in the rematch - he beat the living **** out of you and you were stopped for the first time in your career.

    JUST ****ING RETIRE!!!!!!!

nothing against wayne...he's a top man...but, why should he deserve a shot at a world title...it'll make a mockery of the whole thing if he gets a title shot over a proper contender

Another point in all this is the weight.

When was the last time McCullough fought at Bantam; I'm thinking 1996 against Jose Luis Bueno (over 10 years ago - although I'm not definite on whether this was the last time he fought at this weight).

Old Fighter + Weight Drained Fighter + Fighter With Bad Defence Who Takes Too Many Punches Flush + Fighter With Good Chin And A Lot Of Heart Who Can Take A Lot Of Punishment + Fighter Taking On The Divisional No. 1 = A RECIPE FOR DISASTER.

I would honestly fear for Wayne's safety in this fight.
