Back in 1991, this was another matchup that was discussed, with one magazine saying Buddy had the best chance of anyone to beat the Mexican legend.

I think Chavez would have stopped him. Your thoughts?

I would have favored Chavez at that time myself. But McGirt was a force to be reconned with. He was quick, crafty and durable. Beating Simon Brown at welterweight when he did was no small feat

It would have been a decision bout and the DKP big $$$$ provider is not losing a decision. The best Buddy does is a MA Gonzalez type effort and though many might feel he won, the 3 guys scoring the fight won't.

At Welterweight McGirt could possibly beat him what did Chavez do notably at Welterweight ? He got a gift decision vs Pernell Whitaker and lost to ODLH.

Chavez had no notable wins at Welterweight that I recall and it wasn't a good weight for him overall.

I could see it being a very close decision either way if McGirt is on top form like he was vs Brown.

I still have never seen the fight with Brown. Simon must have been completely weight drained or sick to lose to McGirt so badly.
Buddy was good... but.... I don't know, he was another one of those guys that lost all the big ones....
I never considered McGirt, Whitaker, or Chavez to be natural welterweights. That was just another weight class for Pernell to win another title at. They were all blown up lightweights. I don't see McGirt having a size or strength advantage against Chavez regardless of where they had fought at. Who knows... just my thoughts...

Yeah I saw it 30 years ago or whoever it was. McGirt completely dominated that fight

McGirt looked better at Welterweight than Chavez ever did though. In his prime I think McGirt went like 24-2 at the weight losing only to Whitaker at his best. And McGirt did far better than Chavez did vs Whitaker at Welterweight.

As for McGirt vs Brown that was a masterclass from McGirt not an off night from Brown just a very good performance from McGirt.

I like McGirt at 147 , of course he'd need to win 10 rounds to get a draw

Buddy was a HOF calibre talent, dont underestimate him because he came up short against whitaker who besides being an ATG is also a difficult style for a jack of all trades type like Buddy.
He would do better against a pressure fighter/puncher of the same level, especially if it ats welterweight vs Chavez who was never comfortable there

This is similar to how I see it if they fought after Buddy's technical masterclass over Simon Brown. After 10 JC would be trailing by a clear margin on the cards, but in the last two rounds, the judges would rally strongly and, with true grit, win the fight for Chavez.

Not sure about that. I thought he was a good fighter, but I don't rate him as a HOF talent. He looked good on USA Tuesday Night Fights winning lopsided fights against lesser fighters, but all the big fights he lost. Frankie Warren was not Chavez and he beat him. Meldrick took him apart. He did fight Whitaker close the first time, then took a beating in the rematch. There were a lot of top guys he did not fight either, like Quartey, Trinidad. De La Hoya was another I don't think he would have beaten. Him and Certo talked bigged, but then failed in the important fights.

I recall one fight, against Genaro Leon, where Buddy was wobbled and nearly stopped in the last round. That was against a much lesser fighter...

A shopworn Chavez held a peak Whitaker (at Whitaker's better weight) to a draw, something McGirt couldn't accomplish.

    Chavez by KO.

Bro, you don’t actually believe Chavez DESERVED that draw do you ? And you think Whitaker was better at welter than he was at lightweight ? If you say yes to the above two questions then you’d be the first I’ve heard it from

Well, I think Julio could have been given the W by a round but I'm not going to quibble with the draw. Whitaker worked hard to keep up with Julio and deserved it most likely.
