it could still be argued the older fighters were fitter, in the sense that the participation numbers were about x10 than they are now, so with the much bigger base, there is undoubtedly more natural athletes so more likely to be fitter guys?

Harry Greb did 421 rounds against the best, often bigger, fighters around in 1919 alone. Pac has done 329 rounds in his whole career. I don't really see an argument why modern fighters should be much fitter.

It doesn't show sometimes. Remember not that long ago it was 15 rounds, even more much further back.

Fighting 421 rounds a year isn't good for you, it's a great way to destroy your body if anything.

greb did it this is what makes him ledgendary, froch although he is great he does not come close to greb imho, he is a diluted version of greb, greb would beat a lot of pros of this era :yep without complaining and moaning like a *****.

I've said this for years, things evolve, the world stands still for nothing, today's fighters are better prepared than ever before, the fighters of today will be bettered in say another 20 years, I mean running in big boots is just daft!! The fighters you see today are the best athletes that boxing has ever seen! ;)

Better prepared for fighting three times a year max, often not against the best opposition, and sometimes gassing before even 12 rounds are up.

This is the alltime weakest era for boxing.

Fighters have a better understandind of the body and have better equipment to work with now BUT that does not mean they are fitter imo.

Older fighters prepared for 15 rounds at championship level, often fighting more regularly. Also, in terms of simple skills and technique, modern boxing is utterly pitiful. Watching Ortiz bullrush Berto was entertaining, but sloppy as it comes.

I disagree. Back in history fighters used to fight much more regular... even champions. The fights were more brutal and they lasted longer too. Do you think Mayweather could take on Ray Robinsons schedule? I don't.

There is fitness... and then there is ring fitness. Two different things to a degree. The stamina old fighters would have through fighting took years to develop and no matter how many protien shakes you drink nothing will prepare you for that other than the actual experience of fighting in the ring under those conditions itself.
