Got this for Christmas off the Mrs in a boxset thing with the ESPN film about Ali v Holmes. Anyone read it, and if so, any good?

Might give it a whirl after Alan Partridge's autobiography but got a load more waiting that haven't been touched yet!

One of the best boxing books there is, from IMO the best boxing writer.

Yes, it's a fantastic book. Hugh is a great writer and he really captures the scene and style of the fights and fighters he covers.

Nice one, sounds a decent read!

Will get into it after Alan, needless to say, has the last laugh!

A lot on Ali and Tyson, but also, Downes, McGowan, Cooper, Winstone, Buchanan, Watt, Owen, 80s welters etc

It's a collection of his columns.

It's not so much the subject matter, but his amazing writing.

Don't worry, Hugh won't be getting picked up til Partridge is all done!

Favourite line in the Partridge book so far "Why my parents never had more kids I don't know, though as a youngster I'd often lie in bed wondering. Maybe it was financial reasons? Maybe I'd bust Mum's cervix"

McIlvanney was a great sports writer. Probably the best ever in this country.

I am over halfway through the book now, and agree with all the comments above.

Thought it may be a bit messy with it being in the main a collection pof pieces written for various publications. But it is put together superbly, and his writing style is great. His description of the action is quality as well.

    Thoroughly enjoying it!
