G-man only had one fight at super-middle and he lost while Calzaghe was unbeaten, Calzaghe was far harder to hit than G-man and faster.
G-Man was a brutal puncher but he was also a guy that needed to set his feet to punch. Joe was so good and moving and turning guys, he very rarely got caught with anything significant. I see Joe winning a wide decision in a fight that looks similar to the Calzaghe/Lacy fight with Joe's movement and hand speed carrying the fight.
McLellan was only really a tall Middleweight. A viscious puncher for sure but not the quickest thing in boots and defensively wide open. He can't out move Joe, can't handle him up close and can't stop or avoid his punches. Wide decision for Calzaghe. Don't take up matchmaking for a living pal.
Calzaghe by decision. Puncher's chance for McClellan but it'd have to be early. All the knockdowns Calzaghe suffered came early in fights, while McClellan only ever stopped one guy past the third. If the fight went past four rounds I'd expect Calzaghe to be very much in command.
True. But of course, you're looking at how they'd have matched up stylistically. The stats aren't really that important. Joe spent 14 years at SMW whereas Gerald only officially fought there once against Benn. The other factors to consider are: 1. Gerald had Benn out of the ring. 2. There was clearly something amiss with Gerald, even before they fought. I would have had to have favoured Joe, but he was always susceptible to right hands. If Gerald could have landed the shots that Salem and Brewer did and followed it up, Joe would have been in serious trouble even though he had a great chin.
My point is that both Gman and Lacy were guys that needed to set their feet when they punched. If you really watch Calzaghe closely, he was excellent at very subtle movement to not let punchers get set. One time that I can think of when he got flat footed was against Byron Mitchell and when he did he got tagged. Rewatch the Lacy fight and watch both fighters feet. Calzaghe would flurry and just as Lacy would try to return fire, Calzaghe would side step or as my coach would say ball change. Lacy was constantly chasing and simply did not have the ability to punch on the move. Now watch the Hopkins vs Calzaghe fight and you will see that simply did not work on a complete fighter like Hopkins who could punch on the move. He simply didn't have the hand speed that Joe had. Calzaghe was truly a special fighter.
I'd expect Calzhage most likely to outwork him. Great stamina, solid chin, high punch output, savvy. Not that I'm a fan. We're not sure how sure how McClellan would fare later in fights. Maybe fine, maybe not. It's quite a big unknown. A lot of that depends on Calzhage, and whether he can dictate the pace of the fight.
