at the moment what i do is mix in oats with whey protein, which is pretty cheap, any other ideas?

Not cheap, but healthy. Copied from another post, my food during work today. I do physical labor so I need a lot of food.

A smoothie made of: orange juice, 2 bananas, 2 peaches, a shitload of strawberries, blackberries, flaxseed oil, hemp oil, whey protein, yogurt.

Tomorrow I'll mix in elderberries and blueberries instead of the expensive strawberries.

It tastes great actually. I'm a fruit freak though.

I think it's a **** replacement for a meal, there's not much nutritional value in them.

Champion nutrition's ultra met is a very fine choice for a meal replacement. I work 12 hour shifts and am on the go alot so it helps me get my protein and calorie requirements in the day. Excellent taste also, which is important if you are going to be drinking alot of them.

Put in the oils mate, they're important. Perhaps they'll even fix your bum knee ;)

Get some flaxseed oil and some sesame or hemp oil and mix them in your smoothie. Perhaps your diet is a reason why your knee takes so long to recover, not saying it is since I don't know what you eat, but it's possible.

Fish oil is excellent, I take them once or twice a day. I believe in balance though so I mix it up. Each has its own advantages.

You could try a slower digesting protein. Either egg or casein protein or a protein blend that has them along with whey.

Whey digests fast so getting some slower digesting protein would keep you full longer.
