"The holding wasn’t nearly as bad as the rabbit punches being thrown by Hrgovic. If this was just the first time that Hrgovic had thrown rabbit shots in one of his fights, that would be one thing, but he’d done it in other fights as well. Based on this performance, the only thing IBF heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk has to worry about in fighting Hrgovic is getting brained with punches to the back of his head. Other than that, this is a mismatch. Hrgovic lacks the talent and the engine to beat a fighter like Usyk or any of the top guys.

• This is second anti-Hrgovic post from Boxing247 in 2 days (https://www.boxing247.com/boxing-news/what-to-make-of-filip-hrgovic-and-his-title-chances/267266)
• Fury fight is not happening, so what is the problem with getting this fight, somebody is clearly paying to smear Hrgovic name and to influence IBF not to mandate Filip Hrgovic vs Usyk fight
• Boxing media is adamant in few things and is successfull in creating narative that:
• Filip Hrgovic robbed Zhilei Zhang
• Filip Hrgovic illegal win vs Dempsey McKean (another robbery in other words)
• Filip Hrgovic is not good
• Filip Hrgovic cant beat any of the top 10 (despite Parker, Ruiz, Martin, Ortiz, Sanchez, AJ, Wilder, Gassiev, Kabayel, Whyte, Hunter, Bakole and Joe Joyce refusing official IBF letter to fight him)
• Filip Hrgovic should not fight Usyk
• this narrative is created for 1 or 2 reasons:
• to keep boxing profitable - Hrgovic being a champ is a big loss for boxing
• to keep fighters like Wilder, AJ or winner of Zhang/Joyce relevant - both coming from rich superpower nations, interesting

I like Hrgovic but he's looked awful and disinterested 2 fights in a row I agree with the sentiment that if he fights that way, Usyk has zero to worry about, he's too slow and lethargic and isn't the monster puncher people make him out to be. I do think he has more to show than the Zhang and McKean fights showed, but in a sport where you're only as good as your last fight, Hrg has disappointed twice in a row

Although it's well known boxing247 goes waaaaay overboard when hyping or hating on a fighter

Plenty of people (myself included) thought he lost the Zhang fight. That isn’t because of where he was born, it is a reasonable take if you watched the fight as a neutral which you clearly aren’t.

McKean is lucky he was fighting a classy fighter. If somebody held me as much as Mckean held Hrgovic, I might have pulled a Tyson and took a hunk out of his ear.

Hrgovic won more rounds than Zhang, Zhang just landed more impressive power punches. Typical of boxing fans to like the sizzle more than the steak.

East European boxers have always been unappreciated and disparaged by American and British sportswriters.

The Klitschkos received a lot of hate from Teddy Atlas, Max Kellerman and others over the years. East Europeans have also often been robbed on scorecards by bigoted judges (Kovalev, Korobov, recently Lomachenko), and ruined due to inactivity due to unethical promoters. Dariusz M is not in the IBHOF because of where he's from.

Hrgovic is a fine heavyweight. He was hitting the back of McKean's head because he was grappling and turning away from the punches.

David Haye and Sam Peter used to deliberately go for the back of their opponents' heads, but never received so much negative criticism for it.

I agree, but American writers are like that with British, German and all European fighters too.

Hrgovic is good, but it's a shame he's become very boring to watch recently. I thought he was much more exciting to watch earlier in his pro career and in the WSB and amateurs.

As if that fight will happen at all, Hrgovic will not get a chance to fight for the title.

Exactly. It is solely because he is East Euro that he is being disparaged. Time will tell if he has the goods to make it to the top, but I wouldn’t take anything those 24/7 articles gave to say as they are very biased towards non-American fighters.

Can't speak for everywhere but eastern european fighters get tons of respect on this board. Usyk, beterbiev, bivol, tim tszyu, the big Russian hw prospect ppl are excited about, Loma... Very few people on here speaking negatively about those fighters.

I agree, McKean was a class better than Hrgovic who deserved disqualification. It means he really suffered against Zhang (and he didn't win that fight) and improved nothing. With all the sympathy - he doesn't deserve what he has and looses that sympathy.

That's a pretty big leap to talking about very real Inequalities that exist in resources for fighters and saying hrgovich would have been a champion by now.

And it's not like an eastern european doesnt hold a claim to the hw title right now.

Yes american British and Mexican fighters have more resources than most of the world available to them. But there is still an audience and market for boxing in eastern Europe and they have their own power players in the sport. It's not like we are talking about south America or Africa where fighters pretty much have to move to get to a certain level in the sport.

Lots of victim mentalities here and we haven't even reached the second page.

Hrgovic gets stick because he isn't as good as advertised, and people were led to expect a lot better from him. He simply hasn't delivered, and doesn't look like he even cares to deliver. Hard to get excited behind a fighter like that.

I never saw the big fuss over Hrgovic in the first place. I remember Eric Molina tagging him constantly in their fight before Molina gave upas usual.

I actually had Hrgovic winning 114-113 against Zhang, but we saw his level that night, and he was rather one paced against McKean the other night.

He's about a Joseph Parker level HW.

funny they never attacked dirty as hell anglo fighters. Bowe was as dirty as any fighter ever. Even against the foul pole, he just wasn't anywhere near as effective with it, just like he wasn't with legal blows either.
