Don't even give them a chance to change the subject and make this about Floyd. Let's see what they have to say for themselves regarding Povetkin.

    Hahhaha, Demographs hate this thread.

From the Dan Rafael ESPN article a little while back...

Alexander Povetkin tests positive for meldonium; fight vs. Deontay Wilder in question

"Meldonium, the same drug for which tennis star Maria Sharapova recently tested positive, was approved to be added to the banned substance list by the World Anti-Doping Agency in September and the ban went into effect Jan. 1. Meldonium is used because it is said to increase blood flow and allow more oxygen to be carried to the muscles and, therefore, enhance stamina, a trait boxers would want in a long fight."

By definition this is a PED. It's used to increase stamina, which affects performance. That can help a fighter in the ring or to train longer and harder in preparation for the fight. Either way, it's an unfair advantage unless both fighters are allowed to use it.

It is only a matter of whether it was being used before the ban or after. They have determined, due to lack of evidence, that it was not used after the ban, by Povetkin. But, that doesn't change the fact that it is banned, and is a PED.

Of course it's not in the realm of HGH, etc. But, boxers can't use over the counter diuretics, or even have much else but water and approved performance drinks in the corner. Why would this be allowed, considering the obvious benefits?

Do you not think the banning of meldonium was politically motivated? The article you qouted said 'it is said ' not it is, there is no concrete evidence to prove it is . and there are plenty of drugs similar used in the western world near identical to this that weren't banned

Oh Ok. Np. It could be politically motivated. I don't know for sure. But, the benefits of Melodium provide a catalyst...particularly in sports where stamina plays a big part. From that standpoint the ban seems sound to me, whatever the motivation. Fighters, especially, should not be allowed those types of advantages...in a sport where lives are at stake. Either come as you are or don't come at all. The better the testing gets, the safer the sport will be.

They can't rightly punish Povetkin, if they can't determine for certain whether he knowingly violated the ban. They acted fairly in the situation, based on the available evidence.

Ok.. Now let's see the effects of L-Carnitine which is fully legal shall we?

The powerful metabolic boost that L Carnitine offers is widely understood by today’s top athletic trainers, providing significant increases in stamina, endurance, fat burning and recovery times. Acetyl L Carnitine is one of the best supplements to be taking in order to see the most notable and measurable benefits. Increasing energy and endurance, heart health and cognitive health. Able to cross the blood brain barrier and provide cells with unique proliferation benefits.

The benefits of L-carnitine are particularly helpful in coronary artery disease treatment, as it helps deliver extra oxygen to blocked arteries. L-carnitine also prevents the production of toxic fatty acids. The benefits of L-carnitine also includes improved blood circulation problems. It improves blood flow by supporting better use of oxygen in the tissues.

As you can see, these two have similar effects, both are used in heart disease therapies and both are used by athletes to improve blood flow and enhance stamina. The only difference is that meldonium is now banned and L-Carnitine is not for some interesting reason...

You still saying it is a PED when I quoted the world's best anti-doping experts who confirmed that there is no research that proves it is a PED? So you claim because it affects performance it has to be a PED? Ok... Then all the pre-workout and post workout supplements that you can buy over the counter must be banned because of that reason.

WADA is the one who banned it. Aren't they world anti doping experts? Did they ban because it wasn't a PED with benefits significant enough to deem such a ban or because it was? I think the answer is obvious, despite what you personally consider the motivation to be.

If you want to compare it to other drugs (PEDs or the like) that have not yet made the list, that's fine. But, this particular one has and SHOULD NOT be used...period. It seems you are arguing that it should be allowed, since "supplements" with similar benefits still are.

They don't ban the use of Gatorade, afaik. So, no all pre and post workout drinks should not be banned.

You seem to be hung up on the word PED, because it connotes cheating.

Let me tell you the official explanation. They banned meldonium because they found that stuff in a lot of samples. That's it. I am pretty sure they found other stuff like creatine, L-Glutamine etc. in pretty much all samples as well... And obviously L-Carnitine in the samples of Western athletes. Yet they decided to ban meldonium only and now they are having a lot of issues with that see the last press conference of WADA.

I am not talking about Gatorade. There are a lot of pre workout supplements that improve endurance and have a positive effect on performance like Musclepharm Assault and stuff like that. No, I don't think that should be banned. Just like I don't think meldonium and L-Carnitine should be banned either. I am from Europe if I travel a bit I can buy meldonium and take it. I wouldn't consider myself a PED user after that...

Is there a quote saying they banned it because it was used a lot? Considering the obvious performance benefits, I couldn't see why it would just be banned because it was popular.

By October of that year, meldonium — which also goes by the brand name Mildronate — was on WADA’s monitoring list. In February 2015, scientists completed a study of global athlete usage of the drug.
In reviewing 8,320 urine samples, the study — which was funded by the Partnership for Clean Competition — found that 182 samples contained meldonium. At 2.2% of the sample, it was more than double the rate for any other drug on the list.

Why don't you understand that the performance benefits of meldonium are not obvious by any means? HGH, EPO, HCG, ACTH, steroids have obvious performance benefits, meldonium does not as the researches show. You wouldn't get an enormous advantage if you took meldonium therefore it shouldn't be classified as a PED because it doesn't give unfair advantages to its users.

Whad has WADA achieved? Athletes who took it they will now take L-Carnitine and nothing has changed really. Except they managed to damage the reputation of Sharapova and Povetkin, Russia's two most popular athletes. Like I said, banning it was a political move.
