Meldrick Taylor- 1 Excellent Fighter Against Chavez I

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by sirhenrycooper6, Feb 24, 2011.

  1. M8s,
Chavez, always showed great "heart" ,
against Taylor, I think he did in any "fight.
But in this fight , He was desperatley behind , And needed 1 knockout .
Taylor, was looking like a prime "Ray Leonard" in there .
    Slugging when needed ,
    Moving,
    Throwing Vicious flurries.
Watching it live , I honestly thought that Taylor was going to win 1 shutout.
    This version of Taylor,
    was a great fighter ,
one that would beat a lot of greats .

7-4 for Taylor going in to the 12th.

Taylor was looking awesome in that fight, Chavez was very relentless through out.

    What a classic.

  3. Certainly m8 ,
Taylor was ahead more then tht??

I had it 7-4...Dont let the commentators constant dick riding to meldrick fool you...Meldrick was winning no doubt, but it was alot closer than many make it out to be. Chavez was really wrecking him in those last rounds.

I remember lampley saying Chavez was on "the verge of going down" at one point :rofl

Then in the 10th i believe, Taylor throws a flurry of punches which Chavez slipped and parried most of, and Lampley would yell out "Brilliant stuff by Taylor!" Lots of bias commentary on that fight. But both men really put on a great performance.

I disagree. Chavez won at least 3 rounds. It was closer then the commentators suggested.

Yep. I had a similar score. I thought Chavez won a few rounds here and there early, and certainly rounds before the end.

Meldrick was good enough to Lose by KO to Chavez. I don't know what great fighter Taylor can beat based on the fight. That was only twelve rounder. If it was a 15ner we might not consider this a problem at all.

Chavez was my favorite fighter at the time but I did have Taylor winning the first nine rounds. I thought Taylor was out working Chavez even though Chavez was landing hard shots in close quarters. Taylor was indeed great that night although I also believe the stoppage was correct. Sad but correct.

  9. noway was tht
    "****", correct.
It's the referee's ****ing duty to make "sure",
he knows the time left in the round ,
and to make sure chavez is in the neutral corner.
    Steele did neither.

I understand your point of view Sirhenry, but a well schooled fighter as Taylor was KNOWS that it is his duty to let the ref know if he is ok. (Why didn't he?) Taylor said himself in the post fight interview that he was holding himself up on the ropes. (Why would he need to do that?) Also when Steele asked him if he was ok, he said nothing. (Why not?)The ref calls the fight as the fight goes so when a fighter is seriously heart, in the ref's opinion, it is his job/duty to stop the fight. I felt for Taylor that night because of his heart-felt effort but....He knows that there were things he...an olympic trained boxer should have done. I do understand your view however.

in boxing, one more punch can be the difference between life and death. a second is all it takes to land a perfect punch. yes, the fight was nearly over, but it wasn't just yet. plus, punches are often thrown for a couple of seconds after the bell rings to end the round/fight.

is this overly dramatic? ask the fighters who died in the ring. not that you can, of course...

Thats a great idea, have the ref thinking about how much time is left in a fight rather than the much less important safety of the hurt fighter :nut

a fighter as dazed and hurt as Taylor shouldn't be allowed to continue, under any circumstances, period.

Steele let fighters in a worse state continue in numerous other fights.including his favourite tommy hearns.

He was all over the place as a ref.

I agree that Steele was not always consistant but very few refs are consistant 100% of the time. Regardless of weather he was consistant or noit, the right call was made here.
