Does his career go differently or would he always have faded that quickly? Did Chavez just beat "it" out of him, or was it the subsequent fights that finished his career?
The guy who fought Chavez that night was truly special. Could he have become a star like Ray leonard?

Nothing really changes for either guy. Taylor took a pasting and was never the same again. 2 seconds wouldn't have changed a thing historically.

Taylor took a pasting but by losing, particularly like he did, gave him serious mental demons as well. I'm going to think about this one a bit.

Was taylor always destined for a short stay at the top?

If the ref Richard Steele was as worried about Taylor as he claimed to have been why didn't he stop it before it got to the twelve?

It was actually getting pretty bad in the last few rounds, but what keyed Steele was the knock down. Taylor staggered as I recalled and didn't answer the questions, when he was up and Steele ruled it off.

Depends greatly on who he fights next and weather or not he moves up in weight or sticks around at 140. I think WBO champ Hector Camacho and WBA champ Juan M. Coggi might have been very winnable fights for him in 1990-91. Btw I've never been completely sold on the idea that the Chavez fight totally ruined him.. a year later I watched him take on Welter weight title holder Aaron Davis who was highly toughted at the time and school him easily over 12 rounds.. to jump weight and dominate an opponent of that caliber a full year after the devastating loss in question doesn't add up to being "ruined." Now the Terry Norris match was a different story. Meldrick's people never should of had him in there with that kind of foe. Styles were all wrong and Taylor wasn't made for Jr. middle

I think it turns out the same

The damage from the JC Chavez fight would still be the same and Taylor would still move up to 147 lbs.

The only difference is he is rated higher because of the win over Chavez.

He did fight superbly vs Davis which is why i am thinking he had almost as much trouble mentally as physically from the loss. Whichever combination it was i don't think he ever reached the same heights tho. Such a rough loss from all corners.

Totally agree 154 and Norris was plain silly.

I'm trying to remember if there was clamoring for an immediate rematch due to the controversial ending? I was drifting off as a follower by this.

Yeah not to pat myself on the back but I figured that was a mismatch before the press conference was over. I'm not a big believer in overly protecting fighters but Taylor is a case where certain angles and accommodations should have been made and taken to preserve both his health and longevity. There were plenty of winnable fights both at 140 and 145 for Meldrick to take.. terry Norris and 154 made no sense

Yeah Norris had a big blend of power and speed and was a much bigger man than the likes of JC. His suspect chin was certainly never going to be dented by Taylor at 154 either.

Win or lose, Taylor was done after Chavez, most real boxing fans, (the ones who watch even if the fight isn't a hugh event) realized way before the 12th rd the beating Chavez was giving Taylor. And even if he won, it would've made a very minimal change in his career. Maybe one or two extra wins.
