One of the best performances in history IMO. Theres no 140 pounder today that could beat that Taylor. He'd have wiped his ass with Khan, Alexander, and Bradley.
I didn't think so. He was winning most of the rounds sure, but it wasn't a blitzing bar in a few spots.
Bud McGirt was somewhat overrated.... Sure, he was good... BUT! He always lost the huge "A" grade fight when all was on the line... Losses to Taylor and 2 X to Whitaker really hurts his standing with me.... He also lost a fight or two that he was suppose to win, as well.... MR.BILL
Why would losing to two such fantastic fighters "really hurt" his standing? :huh The Taylor stoppage was premature, Buddy performed brilliantly in the 1st Pea fight, and the 2nd fight coincided with Buddy becoming past-prime and Whitaker producing the last monumental performance of his career. McGirt was a superb fighter, and losses to prime or near-prime HOF boxers should not obscure that.
Great fight! Memories seeing that Floyd Patterson style cut on Taylor going up against the Alien-like dome of McGirt. Buddy was getting blitzed but could've lasted the distance.
McGirt was an excellent fighter. To dismiss him as merely "good" places him along the ranks of also-rans, which is a huge disservice. He was better than that. Very, very savvy, his shoulder just wouldn't hold up. He got a hell of a lot of mileage out of being essentially a one-armed fighter in the last half of his career.
Buddy McGirt is generally underrated IMO. I'd have him in that Kalambay or 2nd to Nunn level. Very good but not great. A really good technician who could play chess with the best of them as he showed against Pernell. Whats also really overlooked as "Salsanchez" mentions, is that cronic shoulder problem which meant he couldn't throw his best punch and really hampered his career.
McGirt was overrated. In this fight he comes out smoking for seconds and then Meldricks hits Buddy and Buddy stops fighting.
McGirt also lost to Frankie Warren, but it was very early in his career and he avenged that defeat. He claimed he was sick against Taylor, but that was an excuse for getting his but kicked. It's true his left was never the same after injuring it in 1989 against Jose Bermudez. But the Taylor fight was before the injury, so that can't be used for an excuse for the Taylor fight. He also was nearly ko'd by the lethal left hook of Tony Baltazar, but recovered to win the decision. I think McGirt's ko's of Howard Davis and Simon Brown were his best wins. But Davis was at the end of his career, and Brown was a little past his best, as well and could be outboxed by a good boxer. He had a lot of bad competition as IBF champion (Brown did) And may have been a little overated himself. McGirt was very good, but not great.
Wasn't it some sort of ear infection or injury that was mentioned regarding Buddy's performance in this fight.
