As you both alluded to Buddy fought right in front of Meldrick and wasnt quite the rounded boxer he would become. So I don't think the comparison is really valid. Haven't seen every Taylor career fight but I just dont remember him fighting someone who used the ring and fought as conservatively as Davis did. I think if Floyd did that its his way to victory...Standing flat footed and pocket fighting which he is known more for these days I reckon would be folly against Taylor, even if he is the more accurate puncher.
Taylor is having little trouble with Floyd... But I am guessing you are talking about Lil Floyd; Taylor had all the physical tools to beat Mayweather Jr, but the mental aspect of the fight would cost him, Meldrick even in (near) his pomp found a way to blow the super fights. I see a brave Taylor live with Pretty Boy for six/seven rounds, but Lil Floyd to gain control in the middle rounds, and ironically ref Richard Steele lets Taylor take too much punishment, before Duva finally pulls out Taylor after 10/11 rounds.
Taylor would win. He has the toughness, offensive variety and handspeed to bother Floyd more than Floyds dictating of range, jab and pot-shotting accuracy would vice versa IMO. Over 12 rounds, 7-5 Taylor in a great fight.
I have to disagree with you there. It will be a great fight for Meldrick up and until Floyd adapts and takes over. Meldrick is more physically talented in terms of handspeed and combination throwing, but he isn't more grounded in solid technique, strategy, adaptability and ring generalship. Whether people like it or not, Floyd is the more proven, IMO, of his ATG status and ability to manifest himself in the ring. I see the fight being more akin to the fight with Zab in terms of Floyd having to adjust to the speed of Meldrick. Meldrick is faster, yes and will get off first with his punches, yes, but he doesn't hit hard enough to keep Floyd from eventually walking him down and he doesn't box smart enough either to outbox him for a whole fight. Meldrick's headmovement isn't good enough, IMO, to keep Floyd from landing his excellent right hand without regularity. Additionally, it's important to remember that Floyd was very comfortable at a lower weight with throwing combinations and changing tactics multiple times during a fight. He could box on the backfoot, fight in the pocket, outbrawl you if need be - for my money, Floyd just has more strings to his bow than Meldrick did. Meldrick has the physical tools to give Floyd major cause for concern for the first half of the fight, but Floyd has the physical tools, the mental tools, but also the corner expertise to overcome what Meldrick is going to bring to him. Does anyone not see Floyd dropping the jab to body and head and then banging Meldrick up top with the right; walking him down and using the forearm to the face tactics, followed up with a quick chopping hook ala Armstrong, body shot, accentuated by a right hand, that Floyd consistently used throughout his career? Meldrick has cahones and I see him putting up a good fight, but Floyd is better and more importantly, smarter and more adaptable. I think his ringcraft is too superior to Meldrick's for him to lose over 12 or 15.
